Not sure of the origin of this little table. I think its vintage as all the screws holding the base to the top are flat-blade screws with some age, but I could be wrong. Only paid $25.00 for it. I thought I knew furniture fairly well, but this one has me stumped. IMG_5187.JPG IMG_5188.JPG IMG_5188.JPG IMG_5189.JPG IMG_5190.JPG IMG_5191.JPG

That screams English to me. Mid 19th or earlier bottle or tea table and a very nice thing too. Lovely marquetry.

I'd like to see its beneath and feet pads.

Yeah! I think you did well for 25 bucks, the inlay helps A LOT i would say, ditto the carved apron. Very attractive.

I was thinking English maybe myself. I was drawn to it because of the marquetry myself Here are a few shots of the underside. They had $150 on it to start and the sale was in a small town and the weather was bad. All three things in my favor. IMG_5192.JPG IMG_5193.JPG IMG_5194.JPG

Wow a lovely table for so little! A real charmer with that inlay work.

    Is the top mahogany?

Looks like mahogany and maybe other things as well.

When I see that inlay I always sway toward Italian work.

It's good, that. You stole it.

Top looks yew border, walnut with ebony stringing middle and perhaps birch for the paler parts, foot maybe elm.

Original condition and for all brown stuff is out of fashion, very very saleable.

If you're thinking Sorrento work, not in this instance. It's absolutely typical of Georgian English.

Thank you for your insights. The only English furniture I usually see is on the British Antiques Road Show.

Great table for an even better price.

Maybe, but looking at that flounced skirt and the painted underside and method of attachment I'd say this was NOT typically Georgian English, far from it IMHO.

I stumble over that round steel fixation middle piece.

The only metal in the table is the screws holding the base to the top. It looks to me like it was probably stained and someone has refinished it. Still signs of stain in the recesses of the carvings.

I'm not seeing paint, just where someone has used stain or wax.

No Georgian English cabinetmaker would laminate that column up, it would be solid - and as for "ebony stringing", well, the black you see is just filler or "gipe" used to fill the gaps in the inlay fits.

The inlay is virtually identical to a 1940s coffee table top that I once had.

    I'm not seeing lamination.
