Hat identification!

I have this old hat and cannot find anything about it on my searches. Does anyone know what it is?

 

No the only marking is the one in the front that is visible. This one is stumping me.

 

Hi and welcome! I don't really know why they'd have a kepi but International Harvester uses a similar IH logo.

 

Yeah it seems like it but the hat itself isn't anywhere to be found. This isn't too common is it?

 

I would but I'm first trying to identify it. The mystery is where I want to put my head lol

Lol this seems to be heading in an interesting direction.

 

Welllll, I see "I N H" with the "I" over "NH," conjoined "HH," and "I" over an "H," etc.. Obviously I'm no help on IDing that logo/letters. I'm not sure if the diagonal line from the top left letter down to the bottom of the far right letter is making the first letter "N" or just a line connecting the letters.



Even though there are no markings inside the cap, seeing a picture of the inside might help in dating it. Also a pic of the back of the hat would help.

SIS, my first thought on seeing the letters was International Harvester also! I also thought about Steve Martin as Inspector Clouseau in The Pink Panther films. BTW, enjoyed Peter Sellers much more than Martin in that role.

Looks like something from a marching band uniform.

 

That is plausible but what would the markings represent?

 

People who invent 'uniforms' for anything and everything have no trouble inventing insignia to make them non-uniform, so no one would have trouble recognising the ones that were more equal than others.

 

Hat is part of uniform for secret society "Order of Iron Hall" formed in Indianapolis in 1880's. More info on web if needed.

 

A uniform for a secret society seems a bit less than secret?

 

Inductees were trained to explain that the logo was simply the common greeting "Hi!" which they carried on their hats and collars to ensure everyone they encountered was greeted the same way. Their secret was only revealed when financial difficulties forced the order into receivership and court documents were obtained by the press.
