Featured Christ on the cross...XVI...XVII..XVIIIth Cent..?? Portuguese..Dutch..Spanish..!!

I am a bit curious, Jacques, as to why you come here soliciting opinions on your items when you're quite certain as to what you have, in fact vehemently so. I'm going to join with those who think your item is not an antique. Besides the electric saw marks clearly visible on the back, it doesn't have the kind of wear pattern one would expect from a 16th, 17th or 18th century object.

Understand 100% What you mean..I have Just put this object on your site after delicately and gently having remove "most" of the Dust and Dirt around with a wet Tissue for presentable photos...Yes Agree with You again...Maybe the wet part of the hair after cleaning..But the Electric Saw to cut half of an inch piece of wood...This is not how you can give a primary judgement or inspect for an Old Antique Item what so ever..Anyway..!! I have nothing against anybody in there...And I repeat again...Very Happy to share with you all... ..Not always ..I do know what is what...But as well my point of you expertise and experience deserve acknowledgement and respect as well..I am an open and positive Person who loves Arts and Antiques...But I know what I know...Maybe my Translation doesn't go through the right way..Sorry..!!

You could maybe read some books and study the art of appropriate ways of relating with others .. that way it would make you more likeable in relating with others and not make them mad. To me you come across as all-knowing and above the knowledge of others .. and rather boring. Now go and read some books and study and travel !!!

 

Thanks for your gentle response...I am am originally French from the South West region Pays Basque...But Very near by Forest of Pine trees in the Gironde Region around Bordeaux...So ,I do know the difference between old Wood..Resine and the rest for the last 65 years...But a point..When i used to bring my wee girls in flee markets very long time ago...I knew how to teach them how to reconize fake Ivory or Fake milk weal teeth in resine or what ever material...But that was long time ago...When you see or have in hand a Genius Piece of Antiques....It does only speaks to you straight to the Brain and the heart.....But this go fo million of different objects...But when You Know..You feel...!!!! I am originally from England and now reside in Canada. My three children growing up were taught to play, laugh, be
respectful, help others, do their homework, etc etc. They all grew up to be wonderful adults, my son is 51yrs old, my eldest daughter is 47yrs old and my youngest daughter passed away suddenly at the age of 33yrs. I have 4 lovely grandchildren and I am proud of them all ... Joy.

Looks like this rough part on the loincloth in the photo below is where another cross could have been. If so, the current cross is a replacement. And given the way it has been cut, a relatively recent one.

 

Have that Christ for more than 25 years...Do believe that We are speaking of a Period of Mn 250++ Years ago...What has been done since...Yes I agree with you...A lot of Historical and Religious Changes....Whom did Why..?? That is the questions..???

Interesting..!!! Half an inch piece of Wood cut with an electric saw...?? Why not..?? Would say more cut Slow and accurately in a very hard wood as Tamarine..Ebony or Calamander..??

 

I agree it looks like chatter marks from a bandsaw on the back of the cross. The finish on the wood does not appear to have any real age to it. Just my opinion as a woodworker.

 

I get the impression that someone has tried to strip it. Since Jacques has had it for ca 25 yrs, it could be a victim of the 'distressed look' fashion which started years before that time. This could also be when the ill-fitting cross was put on.

A Spanish or Portuguese (or Indo-) Christ or other statue would be covered in thick layers of gesso and paint. Which is why the carving could be relatively crude, the thick layers would cover most shortcomings in the surface.
The layers would also have covered the parts where the separately carved arms are joined to the body.
A (sub)tropical climate isn't kind on paint, but this has gone a bit further, imo.

Indo-Portuguese Christs are usually ivory, btw.

 

Thanks again for your useful comments..Yes you are right I suppose that European Climate has not help at all..It is quite flaking all over..And don't want to make it worst by wet cleaning..Yes I have visited few sites on Indo Portuguese Crucifix..You are right most of are in Ivory...But still some in wood...Will try maybe to send few photos to the conservator of Religious Antiques Museum in Goa...Hoping him like yourself can give me some more infos....Thanks again.JB
