Ashantee war medal

  1. Hello,

I brought this medal at auction recently, I believe it's an Ashantee war medal.

My issue with it is, from what I have can find on the internet, these were issued engraved with the name and rank of the recipient, however mine is blank. Does this mean it was unissued?

Also what do people think of the value? As I can only find examples of named medals that sold.

    Many thanks

It should be silver and measure 36mm.
All medals issued were named in engraved capitals filled in with black.
Your pictures are blurred which makes me think yours is not full size, it may be a miniature which were worn as a dress medal at say a banquet or non military function.
Ashantee miniatures are catalogue valued at £45-£50

  3. Apologies about the picture quality, my camera has broken so I'm using my phone.

The medal is silver and measures 36mm so it is full size. It's heavily tarnished with age, I haven't cleaned it as I wanted people to see it had age to it. I've looked at lots of images of other medals and its identical as far as I can tell so I think it's real. Just no engraving on the side

The medal was issued to Royal Navy, Army and native troops, all I can think is it was awarded to a native troop and never engraved.
Some had a clasp "Coomassie" yours hasn`t.
No clasp cat value Navy £300, Army £300, Native £240
If it had the clasp add another £100
The campaign only lasted 4 weeks so the medals are quite scarce.

BTW, Don`t clean or polish it at all, medal collectors like coin collectors prefer them in original condition.

  6. Great thank you, I was going to ask that. I have also sourced a replacement ribbon for it
