How do I find out when this piece was made and the value? Screenshot_20200205-180117_Messenger.jpg Screenshot_20200205-180219_Messenger.jpg Screenshot_20200205-180145_Messenger.jpg

See the bottom of this post for the various labels. This might help.

Berkey & Gay Furniture Company Labels

    Brass Label

The Berkey & Gay Furniture Company used three different types of labels to mark the furniture that they manufactured. The first label was branded into the wood and can often be found inside the drawers of the Berkey & Gay case pieces. Around the year 1900 the branded type label was replaced by a paper label. The brass label was used starting around the 1920's until Berkey and Gay went out of business in the 1940's. Please note that it is not uncommon to find both brass and paper labels used during the same era. Especially on dining room suites where the Berkey & Gay paper labels were quite often used to mark the dining chairs. As with the earlier branded label the Berkey & Gay brass labels can be found inside drawers or on the back of furniture such as beds.

Well, I was going to guess 1920, but not sure if that fits in with the label designations above..?

    Probably more investigation is needed.

Pretty much would have to be completely refinished with stinky crap on the floor of what appears to be a rather damp area. Wood picks up those odors easily, especially old wood. There is no demand for brown wooden furniture nowadays. Komo's estimate is, sadly, what I would be able to sell it for in the southern United States. Furniture sales in your area may be a bit more or less expensive, but it won't be hugely more valuable.

    Hi,
It is a lovely piece except I wonder if those skinny legs would hold very much? I would have it so full but that is me. If you think I'm bad you should see the other half. I am always complaining about putting a 5 lb sausage into a 3 lb casing.:rolleyes::rolleyes:

Do a search on Berkey and Gay serial numbers and see if anyone got some information about age from their serial number and then extrapolate about yours.

It does have the glass in it which is the one thing it really has going for it. I concur with the values stated above. Would cost more to get it ready to sell than you could get out of it unless you value your time as free labor.

We don't know your purpose in asking your questions. If you came across this and want to just get rid of it is one thing. If you are interested in keeping it as a starter piece for your home, then I would clean it up and then use some Howards Restore and Finish to make it look better.

Ya I like it I'm just not sure what to put in it. Lol. Maybe some liquor. I just need to get a key for the door.

Maybe @verybrad or @Ghopper1924 have a suggestion on how to open the lock. I'm glad you are rescuing this piece. Hang around here long enough and you'll start to collect things to put in it even if they are only liquor related. :)
