    Hi all:
I have a Johnson Brothers of England 9" monk/friar plate and am curious about the story on my plate's image and marks.

    My plate . . .

I found a similar one on Worthpoint, and it had these stickers: upload_2020-2-7_22-25-59.png

Assuming that the 1913 is correct, I'm wondering if mine is also an antique from around that date.

Thanks in advance for any replies!

It is. The sensibility of the piece is typically Edwardian. After WW1 we don't see images like this produced.

The one on Worthpoint was tagged @$ 40, but that may have been an old price. What do you guys think these go for?

Here's a similar one currently on eBay...

I see in Terapeak that another similar one sold in the past year, but only for $13 with free shipping. (I can't link to it because it's too old a listing.) The title on that one said it was from 1913.

Wikipedia states that RJ co pottery is a "semi-porcelain . . . with characteristics of fine china, but the durability of ironstoneware." The site also claims that Robert Johnson moved to NY in 1898 to manage their market in North America. I'm wondering what the "Tatler 5" on the back is all about.

I had a plate and pitcher combo that sold some years ago for $45 the pair. My mother always used them at Thanksgiving - the plate for bread and the pitcher for gravy. 1913 sounds right.

I'm going to disagree on the possible date. ;) Stuff like this got made even after WW2 here.

Thanks. Looked him up and looks like he founded Tatler Decorating Company in Trenton. I'm guessing they decorated the plate: https://potteriesoftrentonsociety.org/wp-content/uploads/vol-1-iss-2-april-may-2000.pdf

    Here's a pertinent excerpt:

    W. H. TatIer Decorating Company. The TatIer Decorating Company was founded in 1874 by Elijah Tatler, who emigrated from England with his wife and son. A couple of years later, in 1876, Elijah TatIer died and the business was carried on by his wife and, later, his son, Edgar Elijah TatIer. Over the years the firm decorated wares made by such manufacturers as Ott & Brewer, Alpaugh and Magowan, Lenox, Inc. and Scammell, to name a few.

And here's a Tatler Lawson Decorating Co. piece from the 40s. I'm thinking perhaps it was the same company (with a new partner). Notice the mark and company on the piece: Johnson Brothers! The article I linked earlier said the Tatler Company was sold to Nelson Lebo (lamp manufacturers) in 1953. So if the "Tatler" on my dish is denoting this company, it's safe to say it was made between 1874-1953. Perhaps the number 5 on the dish will be the next clue that'll narrow down the date a bit more, so we can ascertain if it is a pre or post WWII item.

Maybe. Still trying to connect all of the dots. Thanks for weighing in.
