Featured carved wood bead necklaces

    I think the lighter ones may be Galalith, a casein (milk protein) based plastic. The darker could be jet or maybe gutta percha though I think that could be too brittle. They look to be machine-turned. OR to add more confusion, how about Vulcanite?

    i think you might be on to something with regards to gutta percha for the black ones(never heard of that before), looking at other pieces online

    the black ones are indeed brittle, you could snap the wings off easily as if they were light plastic

    would gutta percha smell like wood if burned ?

    i tried burning a sample of the light ones as well, and they are defo wood as well

    A bit like petrol, not like wood. It is a tree resin. I don't think it can be carved that thinly or survive for long that way.

    For the black beads Jet or Irish Bog Oak beads? I have a similar piece, somewhere... found similar beads on line under that search, but cant figure out how to share them.
