Any ideas where this may have originated?
I nearly passed over it and chucked it in the scrap costume jewellery bag but when I looked closer it's older than I thought. Looks like it can't quite decide what style it wants to be!.
    Love to hear any thoughts.
    Thankyou :)
Update, I gave it a gentle wash and what I thought were metal discs aren't as they just disintegrated!.

    Maybe Czech.

I would put that in a small container, squirt that thing with ammonia and water, add a drop of Dawn, some warm water and swish away. Pat dry.

There's already wear to the metal discs, so you won't hurt it more.

It's brass with the coating gone. That's been around a while.

Are the discs plastic? I think this might be a salvage piece for the glass. Someone would certainly enjoy those glass beads.

They are much more stunning with the discs removed. I don't know what they were made of but I'd have laid money they were metal. As soon as water touched them they literally disintegrated into a gluey mess so I've stripped them all off. I'll post a pic once they've dried off but removing them is definitely an upgrade!

I’m truly amazed at the swan that has emerged from the ugly duckling!. Photo doesn’t do it justice as the shadows are sabotaging my efforts. This arrived in one of those joblots that looked promising on the listing but was proving disappointing on sorting. At the bottom was a tangle that no one had bothered to sort and in there was a couple of sterling chains, a 9ct chain, a pair of what I think are little opal earrings (just base metal so probably not quality) and this. I’m now very happy :)
I put it in white vinegar for about 2 mins and it’s really brightened the metal. Bottom photo is before the vinegar.

Thankyou. It was a bit of an accidental restoration but I love it now. Just got to jiggle the beads to fill the gaps and it's done.

Your pictures sure looked like metal discs.
I think it looks much better without the discs.

You can easily fill the spaces with beads from near the clasp.

You could also take two beads and make matching earrings.

That's a great idea. I haven't ventured into earring construction yet though!

Update on the discs. Over on the scary restore vintage jewellery page they think the discs were gelatin or cellulose to fall apart like that. One person washed sequins and they disappeared and one had a little girl who alarmingly put a 1940s bead into her mouth and it dissolved:jawdrop: I'd have had a fit!

Stunning! I agree with the earring possibility. If you put the beads on shortish chains and hook those onto earwires you get the right style to match the necklace imo.
    Yay!

I can take the couple of links of chain that are already attached to each bead so they will match. Can you guide me to the style of earwires that would be right for the date of the necklace please?

Either plain long fish hook shapes, or European leverbacks (my favourites). Both can be found in antiqued brass. If you have some brass jewellery wire you can bend your own earhooks.
I usually buy findings on Etsy.
