I'm usually willing to give new sellers on eBay a chance if the price is right, but also take steps to protect my investment. I always kindly asks seller to package carefully with adequate padding to insure safe delivery. It still saddens me greatly when an irreplaceable piece of history is destroyed because of negligence or disregard. What kind of mid would think that loosely wrapping a piece of glass in a box the same width as the glass with no padding has any chance of arriving safely? And I was really looking forward to getting this one and researching.

Man, that is a bummer. Sorry it happened, I think most of us have similar stories of sellers who have no clue how to pack, but it still stings.

    Hi,
As others have expressed. My worst was an opaline photograph of a great great aunt. I paid for extra careful packing of the glass photograph. It arrived shoved into a small manila envelope with no packing. of course it arrived in a thousand small pieces.

100% agree. My last experience was 10 dishes packed with newspapers. Almost unbelievable that only half were demolished. I sent three pictures with a request for the seller's choice of settling. Turned out to be two twenty year olds trying to start a business and were so apologetic and insistent on refunding in full that I had to refuse the offer.

We settled for 75% back, their minimum. I sent them two pages of instructions for packing plates and glass. And received thanks, thanks AND thank you's.

Some are willing to learn and some never will. It would be nice if eBay required classes on how to pack and banned all that didn't pass the tests.

There IS no excuse for that......hopefully you get a willing refund or if not eBay will help it happen.....REAL BUMMER!!!!!!! And I'd have no problem posting who shipped it, if it's allowed!!!!!!!!!!!!!! OR as TOG said sort of, maybe the seller was new and has MUCH to learn...........

What an idiot, Its common sense to wrap things well, especially glass.

It reminds me of a dealer friend who paid a lot of money for a beautiful work box early 1800's.
It was coming to the UK from the USA, and from an experience dealer, when it arrived it was a mess, the beautiful perfume bottles were broken amongst other things, The dealer had just shoved it in a box, no tape on the bottles, no bubble wrap, nothing.

Even worse the dealer refused to compensate her for the damage.....

I'm just curious but . . . were any broken-off small(ish) chips/slivers in the box with the cake stand?

Hmmmm, makes one wonder if the cake stand was dropped or banged into something by the seller before it was placed in the shipping box. I'm not saying it was packed securely but . . . you just never know.

I'm curious about whether the sales history/feedback of the "newbie seller" showed any past sales of glass or pottery items or a history of people not leaving feedback after receiving items from that seller.

I'm also curious about whether it was insured.

this was a truly new seller with no feedback. So I knew going in that I was taking a chance and bid accordingly. The seller sent the wrong tracking number which showed the packaged arrived in another state on Friday; so I was a bit surprised when the packaged arrived here yesterday; and yes sent priority with insurance so the seller can file a claim. But as soon as the box was delivered with that distinctive sound of shattered glass I knew it was bad. There are lots of slivers of glass and I even stuck a tiny piece into my thumb while taking the photos. The top of the stem has fracture lines so it could shatter even more with little effort; tho' the break does allow for the plateau to be carefully balanced atop the pedestal. If one had the inclination, this could be photographed in a manner to NOT show that it's actually destroyed and offered for sale; clearly a deceptively fraudulent maneuver which might get an insurance claim.

I agree with others that it would be nice if eBay allowed buyers to rate the packing (especially on glass items) so future buyers could assess a sellers abilities.

    !!! Ass FULL of dumb!!!!
    SO sorry TC. :(
    ~
I once had a eBidet twit, after discussion about using a heavy duty tube with caps, put a literally perfect WWII Navy rating pay chart in a freakin' FedEx triangular box!!! Without anything to resist sliding back and forth!
In this box a rolled poster only touches at 3 points!!! :(
It was crumpled at both ends.
I paid very well for this as it was a bidding war. :(
He argued that he put it in a tube. His head was an empty tube.
Apparently didn't care for what I wanted nor the history of a 75 year old rare paper item. :(
    E-jit he was. :(
    ~
The other was a yellow chalkware sailor sitting and playing a concertina.
I got it in a box without any wrapping and stuffed into it so that the box bulged.
I asked why they didn't just throw it away at their end instead of inflicting it upon me. :(

Back in the day when buyers had to handle the insurance claims with USPS. when everything was filed at your local post office, I never had a claim denied, and there were several times when the packaging was severely lacking. These days with online filing I've never had a seller tell me that their claim was denied, and never has USPS contacted me for the broken item and packaging when investigating a claim.

As far as dealing with bad sellers and eBay goes; if they give me a hard time and don't want to deal with the refund, I just call AmEx and let them take care of it, and have never had one of those claims denied.

So sorry TallCakes.....that is a nice piece !

Been there, done that.....& it always feels bad !! :sour:

Most eBlechers are not dealers & have no idea how to pack properly......but the 1st purchase for my Gallery came from a dealer.....& he over filled a box...so that a Heron bowl & mask both arrived with cracks in them.
