Another Goodwill find in Texas...a pricey $18.00 for this CC41 red topped leather desk. The condition is okay, needs a few tear repairs in the leather top and some obvious repair on the finish. Any recommendations on how to fix (not fully strip and restore) the oak top and base? Thanks....

Are you sure on the 'oak' part? Looks more like maple to me.

    Very nice desk.

Hi, I am not sure of the Oak part...I figured that the deep honey finish = Oak...LOL

I'm intrigued: when you say CC41, to me, that means Utility Furniture.

If yours is marked that way, then it's not a desk, it's a dining table someone added leather to. And in any event, that's what I think it is.

Hi, yes - utility furniture, the bottom is stamped CC41, dated January 28, 1952. From what I understand is the last month and year they made CC41 furniture. I did see this in a CC41 catalog as a desk. The dining table is much wider...

Fair enough - which catalogue was it? I do think the leather was added, though - these were generally very plain and simple. Having said that, it's feasible that those exported may have been allowed to be embellished.

I'm very fond of Utility pieces. Great design and very well made indeed.

Dead right, those. I wonder how it ended up in Texas.

Unfortunately when Grandparents pass, the kids or grand-kids have ZERO idea of what they have inherited and donate to GW. In December I came across a set of Ingmar/Westnofa Siesta chair and ottoman, beech wood and leather....for a whopping $17.95 each...Crazy

Again, great article OBB....I see that the "freedom of design" phase lasted from 1948 to 1952, which puts this piece into that category.

:D :smuggrin:I know...I was trying to find something with the bulbous legs that was squared to show a decent example of a writing desk. Can we see it "opened" or "unfolded" or see what that writing surface looking piece of wood is?

Top framework is oak but agree that the rest looks to be something else. Looks like a dining table but think that leather makes it a library or writing table. Don't see this as a desk which, to me, includes drawers. A little Howard's Restor-A-Finish or similar to the wood would spruce this up considerably. The leather condition is a shame but guess we can't quibble for the price.
