Hello Members I have just purchased an interesting miniature, pick it up tomorrow,
said to be by Thomas Bishop 1753-1833. Worked London ,Paris Philadelphia,
The image is said to be an officer of the 82nd Regiment, the small amount of research ,that I have done is that he may be from the Loyal Worcestershire Volunteers,or some similar regiment.

I am not sure if it has been correctly attributed ,as to the Artist (not signed) and regiment.

It would be great If some one may be able identify the uniform.

    Kind Regards Giotto.

The motto shown on the hat "Honi soit qui mal y pense" is a French maxim used as the motto of the British chivalric Order of the Garter.

    Hi Couch Potato

I am sure there were some tiny (short painters of Miniatures)

Thanks very much for your reply on the motto,on his shako (hat)someone gave the correct term. I will look into that English version of the motto.
It will be interesting if I can track down who he was.

    Regards Giotto

There are a couple LWV buttons on this site. The letter style (at least of these)seems more like Lakenheath & Wangford Volunteers or Loyal Wrentham Volunteers with a crown in there somehow. I have no idea personally.

I think this miniature is by a minor or provincial portraitist, as (to my eye) the work is rather stiff and pose somewhat ungainly.

Many thanks for your reply ,Blooey, you may be right,he may have been a provincial artist, not much is known about him,I am not sure if it is by him ,the attribution by the auction house may not be correct,at this stage it is the only name I have to go on.
The price was quite high ,there was a fair bit of interest in him.

    Regards Giotto.

You've got to watch those Auction House attributions, usually BS catch-all's.

I agree, unsigned miniatures are always difficult To attribute,am going to ask the auction house if I can speak with the previous owner,to find out ,how they identified the artist, and get any info I can about it.
As Thomas Bishop is a very obscure artist ,and not a famous name,I am hoping it may be correct.
As I have discovered He did exist in the period it was painted.
    Regards Giotto.

Out of all the miniaturists, known and unknown, it does make you wonder why they choose him. It's odd that there's so little about him online. The descriptions suggest he was well-enough known in Philadelphia, which also suggests that he was a competent artist. I would guess he painted some prominent Pennsylvanians in his day. For what it's worth, here's an entry from "A Dictionary of British Miniature Painters" by Daphne Foskett:
    z-Bishop.jpg

Looks like he left Britain in his mid-thirties. He would have been fully developed as an artist by then but, if there's any legitimacy to the attribution, this could be an early work.

I really couldn't tell you about your miniature other than it's a military painting and I suspect a wooden pose (stiff) is what the sitter ordered. Also The Most Noble Order of the Garter wasn't given to many people so finding out who the sitter was might give you a clue to who painted it. I have a few Indian miniatures on boxes mainly but I did pick up a set of 7 the other day, unfortunately one had lost it's glass and is damaged beyond recognition (sorry bad photo) View attachment 235852

    Hi Morotherstuff
Thanks for the great info, I have the 1979 Fosskett (antique collectors club)for some strange reason he is not mentioned there.
You must have looked in a later edition,
sounds like he must have be English, she does not mention where he was born.
Again many thanks,I will keep plugging away, with the research .
I am waiting to hear from the previous owner.
one image looking through back ,and other images after I had it at home.
    Regards Giotto.

Thanks, looks like the collectors club version ,was not as detailed .
When I was in Oxford saw the two volume version ,should have bought them,as we were on a long holiday, and I already had the collectors version ,decided against buying them.
