Modern Painting on Silk - Artist and Translation Help

I would really appreciate some help in identifying the artist's name and title of this painting on silk, or at least to be sent to a location when artist's seals/chops etc. can be looked up. I bought it to hang over my mantel after my cats destroyed the previous lithograph by knocking it off the hanger and scratching the surface when the glass broke. It's a temporary piece, but I really liked the movement across the field and the colors. It could just be a décor piece. I don't know. I thought I would ask for some help. @JayBee @Mat or maybe someone else.

 

The chop mark look embroidered...are the letters as well? Are you sure it is a paintings...take out a magnifying glass...if you see threads on the horses or brush strokes or if it is a print you will see :::: matrix.

 

You are great. I just looked at the grass when I bought it, but I think it is a mix. The grass appears painted and the horses embroidered! What do you think - other than the glass needs cleaning.

 

I think it is well done...can we see the back? Do you know where this originally came from? ie...thrift store antique store? Not the run of the mill tourist stuff.

 

I'll have to take it down to photo the back. I bought it at a resale shop that often has higher end things, but also a lot of décor stuff.

 

功咸刭馬

As from wikipedia: 功咸 Gong Xian was a scholar loyal to the fallen Ming dynasty.
刭馬 Horses

When written this way it tends to means it is an image of horses in the style of Gong Xian. Though this may not always be the case, as the person creating the artwork could simply add the text regardless.

 

I beg to differ. It is nice, but machine embroidered, and made as a decorative piece/souvenir.

Agree, just like marks on Chinese porcelain.

 

The red 'stamp' is small Seal Script, an ancient form of Chinese writing.
I have a 753 page document listing a great many of these Seal Script characters side by side with the modern day counterparts, making for much easier translation.

What I meant by not your usual tourist stuff is it doesn't depict Chinese landmarks etc. It is not old(pretty sure), and it very well may be machined... but usually machined is pretty accurate stitches, from what I can see they aren't. The chop mark for example isn't tight or accurate. JMHO. I do know they sell these NEW somewhere online, I have seen 'similar'.

I very much appreciate your thoughts and comments. My goal in purchasing this piece was to cover up a large prominent space in my living room with something that was interesting, attractive and colorful until I could find something permanent. I used to have a beautiful lithograph of flower sellers, but I was loathe to rehang it after it was damaged. The space has been empty for months. I have a number of Chinese silk embroideries - about 30% reproductions and the rest - antique. The "vintage" ones have a characteristic bigger stitch like this but were hand done. While I can't tell without taking it apart whether it is machine or hand made, it is looks modern to me. Your link is to a work with a similar theme and colors and claims to be hand made.

 

Claims by Chinese ebay sellers are usually to be taken with a grain of salt. Or a whole bag.

 

I do have other documents which show such comparison with Egyptian hieroglyphs, ancient Bone Script, and a variety of others, if it ever comes up.
