I got this at the auction on Friday & I need some help translating the words on the one side. Hopefully that will also lead to clues about the images on the other side.:happy:

It does have damage on the foot, but hopefully someone will be able overlook that. I am also wondering if the engraving on the foot was done at a different point. It just seems to be a little more crudely done that the engraving on the bowl & the lid.:confused:

It is 9 5/8" to the top of the handle on the lid, 6 7/8" to the side edge & 2 7/8" across the top.

Also I saw a few of these listed as Deckelpokal, so what is the difference?

Thanks for any & all advice or opinions!!!:kiss::kiss:

Google Translate might be helpful (if a volunteer doesn't appear.)

    Stunning!
    Deckel means lid in German.

    "Vergnügen des Vergangenen,
    freude des gegenwärtigen,
    hoffnung des zukünftigen."

They alternated between lower case and upper case for the first letters, but beautifully done.
    Translation:

    Pleasure of the past,
    joy of the present,
    hope for the future.

Figtree3 What would you do if you weren't afraid?

Very nice! I can't give any opinions but am glad that AJ figured out a translation.

Thank you so much AJ!!!!:kiss::kiss:

I was having a hard time between the fancy lettering & the accent marks I wasn't sure what to plug into Google translate. ;):rolleyes: :D:D

That is a beautiful toast, too bad I don't drink anymore. :p:p :D:D

So is this a German piece?

Toast can be perfect with a cup of tea.:playful:
I suspect the ships and warehouses are a reference to the old Hansa or Hanseatic league, of which northern German trading cities and towns were member. It was an early international trade association in Northern European countries, 14th-17th centuries.
I think the pokal could be from northern Germany or German infuenced parts of northeastern Europe. After the Hansa period, Hansa culture lives on to this day.

Map of the Hansa ca 1400 (my province is also on it, the lower part of the yellow bit in the west ):

uhmmmmm. You're the glassie, I just provide the narrative.:D I am not good at seeing the difference between a period piece of glass and a good later replica.

A very sound and scientific research based date ID.:pompous::hilarious:

Peggy, there is a Hansa/Hanse museum in Lübeck, Germany, maybe they can help.

There is also a Hansa Arts and Culture Network, the site is in German but it is run by two art historians so I am sure they can read and write English:

Pokal means the form of the glass. like a trophy. Deckel is lid. often used for mass.

I think I am going to put both words in the title just to cover all of my bases.

I will likely let the bidders decide on the age as I don't have a whole lot invested in it so I am going to list it auction style with a low starting bid.

the would-be script (rather what an uneducated hand thought to be old) gives it away as German Historismus which went on - especially on the countryside - till the start of WWI. the quality is not exciting when you look at the Bohemian ones.

I know it does not compare to the Bohemian gilded & enameled ones I saw, but I do think I will make money on it which in the end is the only thing that interests me. I have also learned a few new things along the way.:happy:

you will certainly sell it. but I only wanted to point towards a reasonable price. I hope you didn't pay more than 20 $. frankly, at the moment I don't see more than 50 at max for it, but of course we might be wrong and it's the long lost Holy Grail of glass making by the Teutonic Order in Hinter-Pommerellen.
