I found a pair of these vases recently at a thrift store. 12 1/2" tall. Ceramic bodies, but painted decoration might be lacquer. Stamped in the clay of the base "Made in Japan", and no other markings. I am hoping someone here can give me an idea of the date (assuming after the 1921 laws requiring the "made in Japan" wording), and more specific place of manufacture based on the style and decoration. Any other info always appreciated.
They show some wear on the surface, and the previous owners did not bother to move them from the mantle when they painted the room so there are many small specks and smears of paint. But at $4 apiece I thought they might be worth something, particularly as a pair.

With the incised stamp, I'm thinking 1930ish. Pre WWII

Thanks. I recalled an earlier discussion here about totai shippo and did look at it again. But the decoration on these is not cloisonne, only painted.

I have one very similar - packed away at the moment - same size, shape/form, decoration on mine is branches and birds but done in similar style. Same "Made in Japan" impressed mark.

Very interesting, particularly the reference to tokanabe ware on the worthpoint example. A wikipedia entry describes it: "Tokanabe was mold-pressed pottery, made in Japan for the US market in the 1920s and 30s. It was distributed by the Sears Company in their catalogs between 1929 and 1930....No information is available on specific potters, painters, or manufacturers."
The etsy example is the same shape, and has that circular indentation on the bottom which might be from the molding process. I had noticed the sort of mechanical look. It may be that in addition to molding the pieces with the raised decorations they also made the blank vases for decorating with paint/lacquer.
