This large underplate came with some other Haviland I just purchased. I know the pattern is Schleiger 854. But I don't know what type of bowl it would go under.

I was thinking either a salad bowl, a pudding bowl, broth tureen or something else? Anyone know? It measures 11 1/2" in diameter. The diameter of the center circle is 6 1/2" TY!

I looked through Nora Travis's book "Haviland China, The Age of Elegance" which shows lots of serving pieces along with their uses, but I didn't see one like this. Only a few tureens were shown with underplates, and those that were didn't appear to have a center well like yours.

Is it possible it needs a cover rather than a bowl? Sort of like a cheese server? Just a guess.

Agreed - it looks like a cheese plate sans the bell to me.

Thanks for your comments! I really don't think it's a cheese plate. Only because I've never seen one referenced anywhere as a Haviland product. I think it's an underplate for some type of bowl, possibly a small tureen for broths. At least something with a flat bottom.

Just wish I could find an illustration somewhere. The Haviland books show lots of serving pieces but no measurements like other reference books.

maybe a butter with out the drain and dome? missed your measurements first time around - a bit small for cheese
