Featured A change from Uranium glass! Manganese....

    Oh I love my UV torch!. I’ve had these beads for ages but not done anything with them as they are as fragile as they look. Sorting through my hoard last night I checked them with my torch and they glow a gorgeous orange. I think the tear drops are later additions and are irrelevant. My googling tells me they are c1920 Manganese glass. It also brings up Persimmon glass but that looks more orange. Haven’t yet found out if all Manganese glass is Persimmon glass or if that has different characteristics?
    Did that make sense?:sour:

    Wow! Hurrah for the UV torch! I never heard (or see some..) about manganese glass! They are superb:)

    I had to go googling too!. Was a nice surprise :). I will restring them but possibly may not be robust enough to wear.

    Cool beads glowing like that. :) Any chance you could post a photo of the whole piece laid out as intended on the neck? Definitely seems to have some age. I'd be a little surprised if the teardrops were added later, but maybe seeing the whole thing as intended on the neck would be interesting--and a learning experience for anyone looking for similar beads. Neat piece.

    I’m not sure about the teardrops because it all arrived in the box ( below in the photos) and there are two pieces of jewellery with the same tear drop shaped beads used on them. There are also more of the teardrops than would fit on this necklace in its current form so either they are unrelated or the design has changed significantly.
    I may use them to restring it anyway as they are pretty.
    It has one of those tiny pin and barrel clasps that I believe are late 19thC or early 20thC.

    THANKS KSW, I JUST RECEIVED MINE IN THE MAIL, got to get AAA batteries!
    I bought AA in anticipation, got the wrong size. They sent a small "UV Chart" with it, not sure what that's about, but I will find out when I get some batteries into it! ;)
