That was part of it for my dad too. The other half was his "uncle Harry", who as it turns out was the son of his grandmother's best friend. Never could place him in the family tree ... but anyway, Harry had a bunch of old stamps he'd collected as a kid, and he gifted them to my dad when he was seven or eight.

Thank you for starting this thread, as I have always had an interest in stamps, but not the time/patience to get into it fully. I did have a collection when I was from about 8-12 years old, and wish I had it now. I now have a box of letters sent 'to home' from WWII and have been wondering if the stamps or the letters themselves have any significant value. Will post some when I have photos taken.

I had the privilege to work as a painter for Collins FDC in the late 90s/early 2000s, for about 4 years until he moved and dropped his NY artists (the work was dropped off and picked up in person). Best job I ever had. I had nothing to do one day a few years ago, and did a search on eBay for his covers. It's the weirdest feeling to see something you made on there. Most weren't selling for very much (too new-ish), but it will be pretty neat to see how they fare in the coming years/decades :)

I would have them appraised, just to see if there are any covers that may be worth something

They are always pre cancelled on the day of issue, but they can have stamps added and have more interesting marks on them.
In most parts of the world you cannot use FDCs as postal envelopes.

I recall seeing an upside down Jenny on display in either Macy's or Gimbels about 1957 or so.

I recently bought a collection of worldwide cancelled stamps in which I found a 19century stamp with an error, catalogued at huge value. I have no means to check it, but I know its 99,99 percent fake.

most have underwater marks, i l use lighter fluid to see the mark, and it doesn't damage stamp or glue

i call watermarks that because you have to put them underwater to see them and it sounds better than under lighter fluid marks lol
