Painting measures 28" by 22". Signed Sisson no first initial. There are 2 artists from Massachusetts named Sisson Frederick Rhodes and Laurence P .
From what I am able to find on the web, they both used their first initial.
On Ruby Lane there is a landscape signed just Sisson but no attribution.
    Any ideas?

Looks a bit like Montauk Point lighthouse, but I think it is a fairly pedestrian modernish picture.

I didn't know there was an online directory of artist's signatures:
    https://www.artsignaturedictionary.com/
but it does indicate Lawrence Sisson used an initial, and this doesn't look at all like his

I could read the signature on your painting as Sissom, but I don't find any listed artists by that name.

Can't be Montauk Point - no big red stripe in the middle. Not to mention too many big rocks in the foreground for that angle. Looks more like New England.

But I won't disagree with the opinion on the "art." ;)

Are we sure this signature isn't Sissom?

My opinion, too, GMA. Definitely M is last letter. But everyone takes for granted you misspelled it and shows only with last letter N.

If that pic is New England I'd think further north, like Maine.

According to one of the immigration sites there are less than 35 Sissom's in the U.S.A and Sissom is from England or Ireland.

I thought it was a "N" Sisson. However, with a close up, it does look like a "M". Here is another photo sisson sig 002.JPG

Well, with all the "Sissoms" all of a sudden popping up, I revisited that site stating only a handful by that name in the US. I missed that it was "as of mid 1930s census."

Lauren Sissom from Bangor Maine would fit my guess as to location of Suzy's pic, BUT S.I.S's find is definitely the closest match to signature. And he likes water scenes.
I'm not a Worthpoint subscriber. Any values on there?

The closest candidate for the lighthouse I could come up with was Portland Head Light, Cape Elizabeth, Maine. The surrounding buildings are not right - possibly artistic license was used???

Does the left side of the continent have lighthouses? I haven't spent enough time there to recall, but my recall button isn't working well lately anyway.

Ken's pieces SIS found are Alaska ,,,,,,,,,,,, and NW?

On the other hand Susan's Portland one has a very tight resemblance.

Anyone find anything at all by Susan Sissom?

Thanks to all of you. I cannot believe the time you have spent on trying to find the artist. This is certainly a dedicated group.

The painting came from a Group Home TS in
Southern Ohio. I past it by, assuming that it was a hobby artist. However, I remembered the signature and looked it up (Sisson) and assumed Laurence Sisson. I took the back cover of the frame and the canvas is tacked on the frame.
BTW there are Lighthouses on the Great Lakes also, not to sure how strong the breakers are.

I think so too. Ken's "Sissom" signature looks very similar to my eye.

The only information that I can find on Ken Sissom is that he was in Alaska sometime in the sixties. His signature does look very close to the one on the painting.

Thanks for all your help. Sue

Ken Sissom was my grandfather. He did many custom ordered gold pans, some canvas and other beautiful art pieces. My grandmother still has much of his work. I can tell you the canvas in question is not his. Beautiful though!

    Nlockett:

Thank you so much for the information. I have a feeling that I will never find Sissom the Artist. It was so nice of you to take the time
to register and pass along the information on your Grandfather.

My brother had recently found one of his pans online and purchased it. It prompted me to search again for some of his work. I stumbled upon this conversation in that search. I only have two myself and would love more. As a child I have so many fond memories of him. I used to love to watch him paint! He passed in '97 one month before his 50 year wedding anniversary. Good luck on finding your artist. You never know, you may find the answer.
