Since the back is inlaid, it was made as a stand alone piece, not to go against a wall. In my opinion you need a room about 30 by 30 feet or larger before 'island' pieces of furniture look in place and are not a nuisance you keep bumping into.

 

Just not enough details seen in these pics to tell if newer or old. $400.00 is not too bad either way but close to top dollar if newer, particularly considering the damage.

 

Picked up the desk yesterday. All the drawers have hand cut dovetails and fronts have some hand cut lap type joints. Dovetails are all over the place in size and location on drawers. Drawer bottoms are solid wood that have been hand planed and have bevels on the outside edges where they connect to the drawer sides. Have found one small brass screw with straight cut slot in the bottom of each drawer at the back. Really appreciate the input and direction.
