"Fairing" question

Hello, new to the forum, hope this is how to post -

I picked up what from my web research, appears to be a "Fairing" bud vase. It has all the signs of age, but while I located similar items, I could not find this item. There are a lot of "pig" based fairings, but I think these are bears? What has me confused is that most of the fairing have painted letters, these are incised into the object and the number which I can't fully recognize doesn't seem to match the ranges given on different sites.

If there's any collectors of these objects that can give me some feedback or point me to a resource, that would be appreciated. I'd like to know it's age and any background - thanks

Oh, that is sweet! The bears are harder to find than the pigs but there's no reason to think it's not authentic. Age would be approximately 1890-1914. Even though the title is incised and the number is not within the range you found they are still acceptable variations. It also doesn't surprise me you couldn't find the exact shape. These were made in countless poses, themes, etc.

Don, does the Made in Germany mark indicate a slightly later date?

 

Hi rhiwfield - I relied on Wikipedia for that bit. According to the article that addition of "Made in" dates a German piece to the 1890-1914 time frame. The Wikipedia article is short but contains helpful information regarding fairings. For German fairings it focuses mostly on Conte and Boehme but I don't think this is one of theirs so the date could be earlier. I would put these bears to the earlier part of the 1890-1914 time frame. I've handled a lot of fairings but don't really consider myself an expert. Still I have never seen this particular stamp.

In researching I did come across an Under the Old Apple Tree version with pigs. Doesn't help much as far as this discussion but thought it was interesting. The letters on the pig version were also incised.

After WW1, the German ones were labelled "Foreign".

 

Cheers Don, just wondered whether Germany was like Britain in the 1891 and 1921 format (Britain/Made in Britain).

Bear, at what point did Germany backstamp become acceptable after WW1?

 

I love these bears. Definitely remind me of the German "Pink Pigs".

This set has some damage, but you can see similarities for comparison.
