These days it refers more to culture than location. For example: Spain is Western, but Morocco gets lumped with Middle-Eastern even though I think Spain still has a few bits of territory on the African mainland. Israel has a foot in both camps.

 

True, and it is nowhere near the Middle East, it is in North Africa, right on the Atlantic Ocean. The Middle East is Asia. In spite of the name, not in the middle of Asia, but in the West. They are more western than Western Asia.

They are in Asia, but are allowed to participate in the Eurovision Song Contest, the measure of all things European.
But then, so is Australia, because they love the contest there.

 

...and one wonders what that says about Australians.

 

The same as about the Israelis and anyone else who wants to join.
