My past has returned. I found a box of newspapers, handouts, brochures, etc. from the protests of the 1970s. People used to hand this stuff out in Harvard Square in Boston. I have a couple of issues of the Whole Earth Catalog, Mother Earth News, War Resisters League newsletter, SDS publications, Black Panther newspapers, etc. Most of it is real ephemera - stuff that wasn't expected to be saved - so it's not showing up online. Is there a website anyone knows of that is dedicated to this kind of thing? Most of it is foxed, but I'm thinking it has some historic value.

1967 - Arrested for picketing a restaurant that was discriminating.
1970 - Hunkered down in friends apartment while the riot police went crazy on Hemenway Street in Boston at 9:00 pm, clubbing people and smashing windows
1971 - Walking through the Boston Common and coming upon a protest vigil outside Statehouse and being chased by police on horseback with a toddler and baby in a stroller
1972 - Walking from Central Square to Harvard Square to visit a friend. Came upon a protest march. Hid out in a church. Teargassed inside the church by riot police.
1973 - Went to a folk music concert at Harvard Stadium. Weather Underground showed up to cause mayhem, got into a tangle with police. We all had to flee.

It was not necessarily a great time to be in the cities, especially with little ones.

I got caught in the Paris riots during the Chilean ambassadors visit, so understand a bit of what you went through.

Well, at least you were engaged with the times. And what times they were.

It's funny about the arrest. It was a non-violent protest, but it was Oct 1967 on Mass. Ave. The Red Sox had just won the League pennant and thousands of fans were headed our way. I think the police arrested us to prevent a riot. We spent one night in jail. Later, when we went before the judge, I was already married and pregnant so he allegedly expunged our record. Two years ago, I had a CORI check because we work in the schools. Lo and behold, I received a copy of my arrest notice for "unlawful assembly." LOL

I would probably just list them and sell on ebay or craigslist.
I know someone who would enjoy news about the assassinations of the 60s. ;)

Edited to add: The seventies protests were largely based on events of the 1960s and were often written about in the 1970s. IF you have anything written by Penn Jones, his work is worth hundreds if not more. Other writers, such as some who went to write for Playboy magazine may have written protest pieces.

Figtree3 What would you do if you weren't afraid?

I found this website about anarchism literature: https://theanarchistlibrary.org/special/index

Generally this type of material is still called "underground" literature and you may find something by doing a search including that word.

By the way, I found this special collection at Yale's library with the collection related to Charles Shively. The notes on the collection include this interesting fact:
"Some materials in this collection were damaged by cat urine prior to receipt. Use caution when handling."
    https://archives.yale.edu/repositor...tion#scroll::/repositories/11/resources/10945

I used to have a printed bibliography of underground periodicals! I bought it with my own funds for a work-related project. When I retired two years ago I brought it home and it's now missing. I didn't think I threw it away. Darn!

Bev, I suggest you list this on eBay with descriptions and tables of contents, lots of key words to describe them. I've always done very well (decades ago) on eBay with this sort of paper stuff, just let the auctions run 7 days and end, preferably on a Sunday night. I hope you return to tell us how profitable this stuff was! ;)

I just did a search on "black panther underground news" SOLDS and I think you will be pleased:

Can't open the link, but I get the drift. I think the news media took photos of the protesters and not the scared bystanders. The time we (my roommate Annie & I) got arrested, it was a small picket line outside a restaurant with about 20 people. No press.

We were in Paris with our youth basketball team when they had just extradited the infamous "Butcher of Lyon" Klaus Barbie in 1983. The city was very tense. We were there another time when the university students went on strike not far from our hotel. Educational for kids from a rather rural town.
