Featured Set of 3 1/2x 5" end of year studio photographs, high school 1948.

Is there a name for this type of thing? All are signed in kind of "yearbook" style. Dated May 1948. Thought folks would like to see them as they are kind of fun.

Didn't know if people collect these. There is a little bit of online info on the photographer, mostly just other things he photographed.

Would you call them "Yearbook photos?"

 

Back in '69 we all had scads of our graduation photos to sign & hand out to our friends. Often they were the ones featured in the yearbook but I remember having a couple of different poses too.

 

Yep. Somewhere I still have a little box with the photos of friends (usually same as one chosen for yearbook) with some kind of personal inscription on the back, generally with good wishes as we were nearing graduation. (Senior yearbook photos would be more specific.) My circle of friends wasn't that large, so same little box has the remainder of ones of me not given out in exchange.

 

Wondering if these aren't college classmates. They look a bit mature for high school seniors.

 

Same back in 1980, LOL. In fact, we did it every school year since about middle school age, not just during graduation, using the yearly school photos. Always had to remind mom to order enough of the little trading size!

 

College was my first thought too. But one of the remembrances starts with "Our high school days are almost over..."

I was thinking in 1948 maybe outfits, hair styles, etc. were just more formal or something? The photo card stock is pretty nice. Much fancier than what they used for our photos in the 1970s.

 

Check the names... maybe someone went on to be famous.

 

I thought of checking that... it's just first names, though.

They were taken in Mason City, Iowa in 1948.

 

Until the 1970s, high school students dressed like mini-adults thanks, in part, to dress codes.

It was the lipstick that caught my attention. Maybe worn for the photos but not routinely to school?

Those are neat. I often find vintage frames with the photos of sweethearts in them at estate sales.
The gal rockin those bangs that make a v. I think I had a stylist do that to me once and I was NOT happy.

 

In 1967 we were told what to wear and how to fix our hair and to wear lipstick so our faces wouldn't look so pale. The girls were asked to lean on a table with our arms folded. Even though the yearbook photos were black & white, the ones we purchased to give away were in color. I was not allowed to show my hands because I'd painted my fingernails bright pink with green polka dots. Big no-no. I was such a rebel

 

Looks like That Girl hair. Loved that show.
I remember the hideous rules about what girls could and could not wear.
Thank the good lord those day are gone and over..

 

Since I went to an all girl Catholic high school we were told what we could & could not wear from day 1. I actually liked wearing the same thing every day because I never was a morning person. So it was so easy to just grab the white blouse, green jumper, green knee socks & plain brown or black shoes each day.

When it came to senior photos, everyone was given the same sweater to put on when we arrived so that the photos all looked the same. You could have the sweater tinted whatever color you wanted for the 8x10 photo you ordered however.

Hi Bev,
I went out with a young lady in 1964 that looked exactly like your photo. Her name was Judith Anne Todd. She used to say that she was related to Mary Todd Lincoln.
