There must be something more the auctioneer knows that isn't visible from his pictures, because the "river" on the left side is clearly labeled "North River" not the Hudson.

I think I see Albany Square. If you could read the street names it would help. And the Hudson was originally called the North River.

I see that name as well as "Court House Square" for the area with the rounded "common garden" around it.

An odd element - the compass rose upper left shows that North is pointing to the right and down (toward the lower right corner) as opposed to pointing up (which is the usual orientation.) So that means the "river" is on the east of the town and is flowing south (see the arrow?)

That rules out NYC. But this is also NOT Albany (although the Hudson is on the east of downtown Albany.)

So we're looking for a place on the west bank of the Hudson that would have been big enough and important enough to have a court house square like this one.

You can read some of them if you use the zoom feature on the pix., as well as the names of a couple of warfs.

Yes the Hudson was originally called the NOrth river. ALthough the references I used said it was only for the lower part of the Hudson. But I doubt it.

It cant be North River NY I dont think so. The map shows a ferry and several docks. The river must be pretty wide at that point.

Too bad the large map wasn't of better quality....I took the right end of it and the two smaller ones to try to enhance them.....with mixed results........

This is the poorest quality from the large map..... RT END LG MAP-gigapixel-scale-3_00x.jpg

BTW, I dug up this much info in reference to "when in history was the Hudson river known as the North River?": BUT SO not sure it helps a lot!!!!!

The entire watercourse was known as the North River by the Dutch in the early seventeenth century; the term fell out of general use for most of the river's 300+ mile course during the early 1900s.

ber: I didnt really see much there on LIvingston's. WHen I researched this last week I found a Livingston's dock or some such across the river from New York city but I dont think the map can be of that area. I ruled that out early on.

On the third one of Aquitaines pics, near the bottom. You can barely read it, it says "Albany Square." I think its probably clearer on the auctioneer's site.

If you go to the fifth pic on auctioneer's site and enlarge it, it clearly says "Albany square." Also there's an Albany street running right near it.

So many street names, you'd think something would pop up. Shingle Street, Rice St, Wheat St, Livingston St, Goodrich St. I've checked google maps for all the towns along the river for that combination with no luck.

See this old map here. If you look at that little creek that borders the northern edge of town (right hand side of the map) then compare to that same area on the auctioneer's map it looks the same. YOU can sort of see the creek and the bridge running over it. Also the way the streets sort of run into each other at an angle. Also count the number of blocks to the end of town in each direction. Does it not resemble each other? I think its Albany NY. but not an expert.
