If you saw my thread on the finds forum, I posted this item I got at an estate sale for a slammin' $5. These are rock crystal orbs, as verified by my Presidium. They do not show newsprint upside down. The do reflect pool of light. The are not set in sterling (alas), but a type of base metal (brass?) The strand measures 30 inches long, and contains 20 orbs. Let me know your thoughts. Thanks.

    On my kitchen counter indoors.

Thanks. I always see these guys set in sterling. The base metal threw me off. I never thought I would ever find a strand, it was on my jewelry Holy Grail Bucket List.

This and saphiret are on my "most wanted list" too ..:happy:
My understanding was that in order to be a "pool of light", the quartz beads should be non drilled and that's what you have.. are you sure they are not sterling ? Can it be sterling with a heavy patina ?

I’m confused. Did you make a typo or am I missing something? I thought that Pools of Light i.e. rock crystal must always show newsprint (or whatever image) upside down and you stated that these did not.

Pools of light are rock crystal orbs (tested) set in silver (tested) around each orb, not drilled. There is nothing else that needs to be tested, that is all you need!!!!!!!!

So it’s not true that they must invert an image?

    Very nice!

Are you sure the metal isn't japanned sterling?

They don't invert an image...I read newsprint through them. Outside, not sure...with landscaping. The orbs are wrapped, not drilled. The small connectors appear to be brass or base metal. The metal leaves no tarnish when a polishing cloth is applied. I will have to research japanned silver.

@Marie Forjan So must they be set in silver to be the real deal? Marko thought hers were not silver. (Asking for my own knowledge, I've never found a strand of these. Bucket list for sure!)

I would have thought these look good, but I'm no expert for sure. Learning!

I don't think it has to set in silver. They just need to be rock crystal, right?

Blackened. @Hollyblue will know more about that (process).

This (below) doesn't looks so good. Looks like the setting fits into grooves that should not be there. They should be suspended/secured in the setting with no marks on the orbs.

They should be dead still (like lead crystal) with no bubbles at all...

I agree and also thought that the reason that they were traditionally done in silver was to keep color from being reflected and not yellow them and every necklace I’ve seen that I considered authentic inverted images.

Any clear sphere will invert an image since it is just a lens.A clear glass marble will invert the image.

I think what you see that looks like they are grooved is dust. They were dirty so I gently wiped them down. I would have to try to brush off the dust around the metal holding the orbs. I do believe they are older; from what I saw at the estate sale in pictures and in person, it looked like a mix of modern tribal style jewelry and Victorian to Art Deco older jewelry.

I do have japanned costume jewelry. Is Siam sterling japanned or enameled?

Yes true which is why I stated from the getgo that there was something incorrect about this piece since it didn’t invert.

If the sphere is against a piece of paper with letters,it won't invert. It will invert with distance.
