Are you sure it is a jewellery box? It looks like a snuff box. What is the size?
    It does look Indian.

Much too big for snuff. I think it's simply an Indian brass embossed box for wotsits.

This is what it reminded me of, a Dutch snuff/tobacco box. The size is right, those wide Dutch trousers had big pockets.
It was used either for snuff tobacco, which would be taken through the nose, or rough/shag tobacco, to smoke.

I saw one similar to that at my local flea-market. Made of brass. Looked bloody old, and was very crudely hand-engraved. It was marked as a 17th or 18th century Dutch tobacco case or something along those lines. So yes, I'd say it's for tobacco or snuff.

BTW - a snuffbox is designed to hold 'snuff' (ground or powdered tobacco) which was typically taken by snorting it up the nose.

Most snuffboxes were quite small (about the size of a large matchbox is the largest I've seen), and made from anything from brass to ivory, mother of pearl...silver was extremely common, and usually gilt inside.

Hm. I'll accept the big snuff idea, but that almost cuneiform hand punching is very typically Indian.
