    Hi!

I fell in love with this little guy. It is oddly light for being ceramic or whatever it is. What material do you think it might be? Is it a pitcher? Maybe syrup? 6 1/2" tall with the lid. I was reading the word Japan on the bottom is after 1921 but I don't believe that is this old. Maybe 50's or 60's? Does anyone recognize anything about it? Thank you for any help!

I hope everyone is staying safe.

    It's ceramic.
I can't tell you why this type of clay is lighter than other ceramic.

It's usually the 1930s pre WWII stuff that was inexpensive that is made of this type of clay.
And as you can see, it often shows cracks or crazing.

Maybe @janetpjohn or @say_it_slowly can answer

It even has a hollow type sound when you tap it. Weird!

I've seen that type of clay in vintage pottery, usually Japan. Like Cluttered, I think it was more for lower cost ware, is light weight, and definitely "less of a glass sound" that glazed normal pottery might have if you tap it. I wonder if the lighter type material sped up production in some way. Curious because I really don't know. Great question.

I do like this piece. Really flashy/vintage. Stands out.

And great similar piece found, INH.

The hollow sound is because it is cracked.

Set up about 3 or 4 pieces of pottery and porcelain that you know are cracked. Also set up 3 or 4 pieces of pottery and porcelain that you know are not cracked.
Pick each piece up and tap them.
The cracked ones will have a thud/hollow sound. The uncracked will have a solid or slight ring sound to them

A very good test to use when you are our buying.

Figtree3 What would you do if you weren't afraid?

I can see why you like it. Was the lid supposed to be a different color than the body of the pitcher? That seems a bit unusual to me.

The roses are the same color.
Whether it is the original lid or not, I don't know, but it seems to work just fine.
