I've always thought these were biscuit jars. Never considered ice bucket.

Yes, too fragile to slam champagne into.

 

I also thought Japan. I guess biscuit jar sounds better.

 

Just for the record, ladies and gents:

If your gonna slam a wine bottle into it, it isn't an ice bucket - it is a wine cooler, and it does not have a lid. An ice bucket holds ice (cubes most likely) for distribution to individual glasses, and it DOES have a lid to help keep the ice from melting. You WANT the ice to melt in a cooler as it is the cold water that chills the bottle faster than just ice. That is why the upper end of a bottle that is placed in a cooler usually has a napkin wrapped around it - to catch the drips as it is removed from from the cooler.

All I know is that it ISN'T Baccarat........I checked for that! I've had it for years and was under the impression that it was nothing special, and I can tell you it weighs more than 5 lbs.

If you have any ideas, it is most appreciated!

Though it may appear concave in some photos, the base/bottom is actually flat - flat as the bottom of a frying pan! The interior "ends" in sort of a dimple at the base.

And YES, that is dust! It seems that both my clients and I prefer to use the silver one.............

you know, i really should have qualified my statement above and said that ice buckets USUALLY have a lid.....................but the ones that do not are typically too small for a wine bottle in any case. I have a Waterford ice bucket that does not have a lid and holds enough ice for only about 2 (American Style) cocktails..............say, two trays of ice cubes??????
