Hello, I recently purchased this mug from a local thrift store because I figured it to be Sterling. Unfortunately the mug does not contain hallmarks so I reluctantly decided to acid test it and it is infact sterling.

It has very clear usage dents where your thumb would rest when gripped the handle. It surprisingly seems very well used.

I do not know much about makers or historical silversmithing practices so I am hoping someone with more knowledge than I can help me out!

I love to hear anything you have to say and if you would like specific photos of the mug, I'll provide them asap.

    Thank You for your time!

I understand your reluctance. However, if you rub the base on the testing stone and put the acid on the streak left on the stone, the item won't be exposed to the acid. Never put the acid straight on the item.

Your photos full image, so everyone can see.:)

Hello, JTR. You bought this in the US? How did you "reluctantly test?" With what kind of acid? on what part of the item? Did you scratch into the surface or not?

Have you thought about cleaning it? That might reveal marks that could help identify both maker and material.

My personal opinion (and admittedly only from the pictures) is that it is either pewter or silver plated and not solid silver.

Until you clean it you really can't determine one way or the other if it is sterling.
Cleaning it as bakers said may reveal hidden marks. Or may reveal the pits and wear of silverplate.

    I personally hate acid testing.

A good cleaning, (gently though) maybe some worn marks here?

Hello and thank you for your reply! The mug is very well worn, dented and has a few semi-harsh scratches. I am going to clean it asap and post photos of the result! Thanks again for your time!

It looks plated to me, but it is a nice mug.

Are these new pictures "after cleaning?" If so, what did you use to clean?

Judging by the photographs, I would say the same but am certain it is not plated. I am more interested in dating it at this point
No they are just full sized now I believe. Haven't had a chance yet to clean it.

I have a generic silver cleaner called Silvo I believe. Would you recommend another brand or process?

You're putting the cart before the horse. Clean it first to see if there are any marks at all hiding under the grunge. This may also reveal signs of how it was made and whether there is wear as well.

I have never heard of Silvo. You need to start with warm soapy water - using a grease-cutting dish detergent like Dawn. Where are you?

The packaging is different here in Canada but I would assume it is the same product.
