Hello all, I am generally into Militaria and Police memorabilia... but I found this piece intriguing at a recent garage sale. I know little to nothing about pottery/ceramics. The lady that owned this vase (in her 60s) said that her Great Aunt was given the item as a wedding gift, and she obtained it after her passing. She believed that she had been married some time right around , or just prior to the 2nd world war. There are absolutely no markings or signatures that I've been able to locate. The vase is apx 16" height, and ~8'' diameter. The figures appear to possibly be Greek ( or Roman?) In style, and have fairly intricate details. Would love to find out what this is! I have numerous photos with plenty of detail... however cant seem to upload due to file size. Maybe I can send them in a conversation?
It is a replica of this https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Townley_Vase someone may know more about the maker.
Well that certainly looks similar! Thanks for the quick reply. I'm assuming, being a replica, even if produced in the 40's (unknown how reliable that statement was regarding her great aunt)... its value is minimal? It was bundled with some antique items that I actually was familiar with, so I didn't pay much... dont worry about offending me. Haha. Thanks!
If you email photos to yourself as Medium, it will make them the right size to post. A photo of the bottom might help those who low about ceramics to determine more.
Great! Can you please hit Edit, More Options, Check box for All Full Images, Save Changes. Someone will be along. Thanks.
It looks like plaster or chalkware to me from the photos. I did find a similar one they say that's what their's is. https://www.worthpoint.com/worthopedia/vintage-plaster-chalkware-greek-19968468
That's the one! Any thoughts from anyone on value? Should I look at refinishing and selling?, or is it safe to say it's not worth it and I may as well use it as an outdoor vase?
If it is plaster, it won't hold up outside. Welcome to the board. If the edit button is still showing, you can go back and take out your duplicate images. Edit, More Options, there will be a delete button next to the pictures you want to take out. Save. Edit disappears after a bit.
