Does anyone know what this is?

Continuing with the garage clear out, this was found with some African weapons so I assumed this was something similar, although it crossed my mind it might be some sort of big drumstick.

It's approximately 40cm in length and has some real weight to it.

I'm curious about it as I've had quite a few people over to buy other items in the garage sale and they've all asked how much is it, even though we're not selling it. But I'd love to know what it is.

I've given it a close inspection but can't see any markings or anything so, yet again, I'm completely clueless. But that's why I use this forum.

    Thank you in advance.

Yes, it's from Fiji, in the South Pacific. And it is "marked," in that the carving on the handle is one of the main features, along with the rounded top, that identify it as a traditional ula, a type of war throwing club from Fiji.

Fiji makes more types of war clubs than probably any other culture, so they are not uncommon. They have been popular souvenir items from Fiji, as well as used in dances and performances, for years. But you don't see them that often.

I can't tell from the photos if there is a hole drilled through the handle for the cord. In any event, the cord is not considered original to a traditional war club, so it may have been added by an owner.

It looks like a good item to me, and no wonder people were asking about it. I have a small collection of Oceanic weapons, and it would fit in nicely!
