Some costume brings more than fine jewelry. You'd be surprised.

The pearl studs- are they earrings or cufflinks? Can you show a side view?

Can we see the backs, one open, one closed, of the multi pearl cluster earrings?

seems those people visited the right places to spend money. nothing more relaxing than a nice Swiss spa.
Davos was such a place as well before they allowed a Kraut to invite all his criminal friends to have a big party.

The coral necklace is 19th century Dutch. It is made of Mediterranean red coral and 14 or 18k gold. I would love to see the marks.
This particular style filigree and repoussé gold clasp was worn in the province of Zeeland, the southwest of the Netherlands. The added coral cabs to the clasp are specific to the small town of Axel. That makes this a rare piece. I don't know if an American appraiser would appraise this necklace correctly.

This Axel necklace is for sale, the price is in Euros:

Not unusual at all where I am.:playful: Dutch regional dress coral necklaces have that general look, I have one myself.
    Of course we have!
You wouldn't. These bears are a fairly recent addition to the Zuni style fetish necklace, and many are carved in the Philippines. Zuni style fetish necklaces have been around for quite some time, but even though some features are traditional, the style itself is not traditional.

lovely Biedermeier coral Kropfkette ("goiter necklace" to hide away the old neck), possibly made in Capri for the German market.

    Sure Fid.
So in your view the Dutch ladies in the pics below (and a couple of million others) went to Germany to buy their necklaces while the Dutch goldsmiths sat around twiddling their thumbs?

And hiding old necks? They started wearing them at an early age. The first is a young lady:

I'm sure they would not, although whatever they told you, they would say with a great air of certainty.

I wasn't paying enough attention to the grid behind to realize that the coral is choker size (sure wouldn't want to gain weight in your neck!) & that what I was seeing as a choker necklace is actually an unusual looking bracelet with what might be a cornelian/carnelian cabochon.

Size confusion.;) The photos are a bit crowded, that could be it. I agree, the cab on the bracelet looks like a carnelian.:) Looks like Art Deco period.

Any Jewelry, do you think Cheryl should send a picture of the coral necklace to Sothebys or Christies?

I wish I could read the article you posted about them!

I would try 'Zeeuws Veilinghuis', Zeeland Auctioneers. They are excellent local Zeeland auctioneers of international fame.
Their specialities are right up my alley, Zeeland and Indonesian arts and antiques.

You probably mean the last link, I added that to show the name Zeeland in the link, especially for Fid who clearly didn't believe me. The story itself is about how one of the necklaces was found in a box with junk in an attic.:jawdrop: Now why don't I ever find such a box...:(:playful:

@Fid , this is what you mistook the Dutch coral necklace for, a Biedermeier Kropfkette.
This one is from Innsbruck in Austria, the south German ones are similar with only slight differences in the clasp.
It is made of thin silver belcher chains, and has a layer of repoussé gold on the silver clasp. Photo isn't too clear, it is a dark day here:

Bottom line, it looks like you have some potentially valuable pieces in the suitcase.

Personally I think I might take maybe some assorted pieces to a jewelry store. Try to go to an independently owned store rather than a chain store.

Tell them you are looking for an non-written appraisal just so that the jewelry can be equally divided between 2 family members.

Any offers to buy any of the items are politely declined. Also make sure you have a pen & paper to make yourself some notes.

I would also avoid taking things that have already been ID'd as costume as a majority of jewelers turn their nose up at anything they consider not fine jewelry.

They also might not see the worth of the coral necklace unless there are gold marks & if they are Dutch gold marks they might not recognize them either.

I would take a strand or 2 of the pearls, the 5 rings you showed together on page 1 & the pearl earrings/cufflinks you just added.

JMHO & let us know what you find out.

Also on the fetish necklace you might want to check the end cones for a signiture.

It might not be Native, but I'd say the odds are good. I'd look over that bracelet with it for marks too, but if it's legit it might not have any anyway. A lot of Hopi, Zuni etc makers don't bother to this day.

Those backs look odd to say the least. I'd be wondering about cuff buttons too. You'd need two hands to attach one, so anyone wearing them would have had servants or a handy spouse.

Me too! ... and I'd love a good rummage in that suitcase; I've gotten more precious metal in the "junk" pile than you want to think about.

You may want to invest in an inexpensive jewelry loupe to help you look for the tiny marks on jewelry. They are available on Amazon, eBay & depending on where you live probably locally also.

I am quite certain that has crossed the mind of many of your fellow members, me included. :D:D:D
