Tribal photos from WWII, where from?

The hat insignia looks like the star emblem of a Japanese Army Officer. Possibly like the star emblem of the repro on the auction item number 231175797862.

Delight to have der-adler contributions on these military subjects. I tried to ID the rank of this soldier to only coming up with the 2 star collar tab for some sort of a NCO like a sergeant or a private 1st class. With the rest of uniform and sword, I knew those ranks were wrong.
