New purchase of mine from a consignment auction of a former university professor. I haven't quite narrowed down the date yet but it has an independent Sudan which means it is post 1956 but still has French West Africa which means it is pre 1960. I have the PDF on how to determine the exact date of manufacture so no worries, just need time to do it.

It is a library globe manufactured by Replogle and is 16'' which makes in larger than the standard size of globe you usually see. I paid $20 for it. No clue if that was a bargain or not but I like it due to the size, the ease by which it swivels, and the presence of lots of obsolete countries and territories on it. I guess I'm a nerd still.

    Your thoughts?

Is there any globe collectors out there? I assume that vintage globes would be a rather niche market and have never seen too many of them in antique shops/malls.

Very nice -- I'm not a collector but used to work in a library that had a small collection of globes as part of the map collection. People liked looking at them.

Globes are very cool! Looks like a nice globe for a great price Joe:)
Careful, globes can be additive, there are so many different types (sizes, colours, raised relief, with lights) out there:)
Yours is referred to as a 'full swing meridian'

I’ve always been fascinated by globes. So fun to spin, ponder, wonder, and imagine.
Not sure if there is a good market for them or not. I had good luck selling one of the gemstone globes for a big margin once.

I love globes but don't have the space for collecting them. That said, if the right one came along... well, we make space, don't we!

That looks great. I am looking to buy one that lights up. They remind me that I am part of a larger community than I realize; I need the reminder to help me navigate these times.

I don't know what the US market is like for globes but in the UK this would be a real bargain for £20, I have been looking for a good globe for ages and this seems to be in good order and a nice size. Good buy IMO

    @Joe2007

There was a US guy on the eBay coin forum who specialised in Globes.
He has not posted there in about 5 years but he is still active in selling coins.

    toms-world he's from Georgia

You might want to contact him via eBay.

Got another vintage globe today. This one is late 40's to early 50's I think. It has India and Pakistan partitioned but doesn't have a divided Korea yet. This globe is much smaller than the one shown in the opening post of this thread but I really enjoy the contrast between the landmasses and the black oceans.

Very interesting. And no date on it anywhere?

Replogle doesn't put dates on their globes. You have to go by changes in borders & names. I am sure I could pin it down with a bit of research if I feel like investing the time.

I was lucky enough to find a light up one on the side of my road the night before trash day last summer. Just as a rain storm had begun. Something wasn’t working, I forget what. I listed it real cheap and it sold real quick. It had a long arm it hung from. Wouldn’t mind having one like that in good condition.

I've sold a couple of globes. Never found a real interesting one. It's looking for the old places that no longer exist that I like.

This tin globe from the early '60s was probably a five and dime special, but it shows John Glenn's orbital flight of 1962:

Globes sell well here. Most are under $30.00 but some really nice ones can go quite a bit higher. That black one would be about $40.00 here. It also comes with a chrome base which is even more sought after, or the holy grail of deco design globes...
