Hello everyone! This is a stepback cupboard that is coming up for auction locally. These are not my photos and there are none of the back. It has been refinished and the blue paint is obviously not very old...is the rest of the painting recent as well? The measurements are 45"W x 18.5"D x 95"H. I'd also like to know any thoughts regarding age (it's listed as circa 1840's-1850's). Thank you for any help you can give! 20200712_230640.jpg 20200712_230640.jpg 20200712_230543.jpg 20200712_230640.jpg 20200712_230543.jpg 20200712_230516.jpg 20200712_230333.jpg 20200712_230421.jpg 20200712_230503.jpg 20200712_230350.jpg 20200712_230405.jpg 20200712_230434.jpg 20200712_230450.jpg

    The accents are newer painting.

At one time it was painted green, which would have been in keeping with the 1910s/20s. You can see the green paint residue.

I think 1840/50 might be a little early. I would think mid to late 1800s. My opinion. Let's ask @verybrad @Ghopper1924 @James Conrad

I should add that they have done a nice job refinishing it. Even though they have painted the accents it's not displeasing. Makes it more fitting for today without being over done.

    I don't know
Yes, it was mentioned that it was a very nice refinishing job.

Yes, paint is newer but it's very well done, I'd give it a + for that.
That is possible but, given the hardware & casters if original, I'd guess later, 1880s-
Agreed, more likely late 19th century.

It's a nice looking cupboard, country built, the refinishing/painting is professionally done. It's pine and probably late 19th century. Are we sure it's American? The arched pediment looks almost Dutch or possibly French Canadian? It's attractive but looks more European than American.
Where are you & cupboard located?

I'm in the midwest US as is the cupboard.

I agree, this could be a Dutch country 'buffetkast'. A lot of Dutch furniture ended up in North America, for obvious reasons.
I really love the painted decoration, it was done with great feeling for the esthetic of the cupboard and the warm colour of the wood.

Everyone's pretty much covered it. In my area of the Midwestern U.S. I'd have no problem with an 1850s date, probably made either in Germany or by a German immigrant here in the U.S. Nice work with the "cottage" paint job, although you would be very unlikely to see such highlights on an original piece around here.

Yeah, I'd say everyone agrees on that, antique cupboards have taken a substantial hit in lower prices in recent years with a few exceptions. Not sure why exactly but their size probably plays a role.
Generally speaking, 2 piece cupboards are more desirable, much easier to move than 1 piece.

Pretty much in agreement with the rest. Think 1850 too early and 1880 may be a little late, so splitting the difference at about 1865 or so. Civil war era or just a bit later.

That makes sense. I will note that this cupboard is being advertised as a 2 piece.

Nice step back cabinet. Pleasing to the eye. Nice detailing, too.

If you are thinking of purchasing this, you should note the damage and bid accordingly.
Can't tell if the glass is missing or if it is something inside the cupboard. Glass can be replaced.
It's still a lovely cupboard and if the price were right, I would go for it.

Yes, the glass is damaged; they had a close up of it but I forgot to post it. Thank you for your advice!
