Another necklace added to my hoard. Normally, I'd pass over this one since I still can't tell the difference between modern Kuchi jewelry and older stuff. But something about the craftsmanship and the style of the dangles caught my eye.

The cord feels older. Tested negative for high-grade silver. I don't know how to test for lower grade though.

    Probably a job for @Any Jewelry :)

Nice find Barn. It is Ethiopian. It could be .600 -.700 silver, but collectors of traditional Ethiopian jewellery aren't fussy about finenesses. They know it usually isn't high, it is the style and authenticity that count.
So African rather than Middle Eastern.
You can tell there is only a small stretch of water between the Horn of Africa and Yemen though, there is a clear relationship stylewise.

Our new member @Peter Hoesli may be able to tell you more.:)

Thank you! I'll confess: after I tested it for silver and realized it wasn't high grade, I was really afraid that I had made a mistake again (which I've unfortunately been doing more frequently lately) and bought something for more than it was worth. Very happy to be able to pin an origin to this one, and looking at the prices online for similar necklaces, I'm thrilled at this find!

I was hoping it might be from Yemen when I bought it. That makes sense that the two countries have similar styles.

I have never seen Yemeni pieces with that stamped dot decoration, maybe that is a clue next time you come across a Yemeni-looking piece.:)
Not all of Ethiopia has a style related to Yemeni, just some parts that are directly opposite Yemen. Most of Ethipia has a distictly Ethiopian style, Coptic crosses and dainty little amulet boxes for instance.
