We bought this large covered cheese dish for the striking pattern

It looks to be c 1870 and Staffordshire to me, but despite the backstamps neither me nor the missus can identify the pottery :(

    All help welcome!

I need to be at my desktop, but on my tablet I am.not getting a match for the backstamp for Onondaga.

    My apologies.
When I looked this morning my first thought was this might not be English, but American.
I was in a hurry this morning and I saw "O P" over "S". So did a quick search and came up with Onondaga.

I see now that the mark does not match correctly.
And as Janet has pointed out, may actually be a "J" and not an "O".

I hope I didn't cause you to spend too much time looking. Sorry.

    Many thanks!

At least I know it isn't me having a bad identification day ;)

Unless we have a breakthrough looks like this will be an unidentified cheese dish, c 1870, probably Staffordshire.

With a striking pattern, possibly aesthetic movement?

Stick the photo on the Facebook British Pottery and Porcelain page, you never know.

I meant to say "can't" make out, but you all got my drift. I thought it was odd that they had an entire set and we can't find one other object.

I agree that "aesthetic" is a good description, @rhiwfield. Note that the pattern name is Canada.
