    Dennis Tjaden Old ball coach......

Hello, I am looking for help on finding information about this artist and this painting. It needs cleaned but I liked it.....It appears the name of the artist is Fergen. I'm interested in the artist and approximate time of the painting.

    Thank you!!

Hard to tell from photographs but... Appears to be a decorative painting from the 1920s/1930s. A photograph of the back (including frame) would be helpful.

Thank you Debora, do you or does anyone know the artist?

Also, would it look better if I had someone clean it? I know may be hard to tell from the pics that I used but they are all I have right now, I'm at work at the picture is at home.

If a decorative painting, the name of the artist wouldn't be important. It would have been created for sale in a furniture store and sold to be hung over a couch. (From its dimensions, that does seem likely.) A professional cleaning is unlikely to enhance value. But someone here is very likely to come along to provide you with (safe) tips for "refreshing" it yourself.

Looking at the heavy gold frame, I think it is later 1940s/50s.

That's a good point and very possible.

Might have been a hobbyist painter.
Oil painting was a popular hobby of the 40s/50s

Can YOU tell if it's an OIL painting?? IF you can, put some spittle on a Q-tip and rub in an inconspicuous place....see if it cleans it at all......it looks heavy with either dirt or nicotine......but that could also be the lighting....then it's up to you if you want to try yourself or have it done!! JUST ONE suggestion, PLEASE WAIT for others to chime in!!!!

**BTW, IT LOOKS LIKE it says something AFTER the name, can you read it????

Sometimes theses were prints with painted enhancements so it pays to be slow and cautious.

The composition is static and the center of interest is weak. Horizon line splits the canvas right in the middle, which is rarely a good idea. The focal point is almost dead center horizontally and vertically.

It is almost begging for some figures to be huddled by the bridge talking over the day's events.

Sorry, don't mean to bag on your piece...
