    Hi,
I think this fan is made from bone but wanted to double check - it is 13" x 7 1/2", has yellowed quite a bit in spots, should I try and clean it?
I'm not sure if this is Chinese or Japanese, any way to determine which it is?
    Any information appreciated.
    thanks for looking

it's bone alright. You can see all the flecks and grooves and channels where connective tissue used to grow. You'd never find that with ivory.

If you want to polish or clean it, I have used Brasso with success, when it comes to cleaning/polishing antique ivory & bone.

If not, it's the most legendary end to a lovers' tiff in history.

It is Chinese and pierced bone, 19th century.
I wouldn't clean it, fan collectors don't mind a bit of history, and something this fragile could break. Or you could stain the ribbon, which looks perfect now.

I'm amazed it's that old. Bone, horn, ivory, early plastic, wood, composite ... any cheat sheets most welcome. But that is probably fodder for a different post altogether. It is a beautiful fan.

The tiny 'scratches' on this part were channels for blood vessels, that means it is bone. Sometimes the channels show as very small black spots or stripes.

BRASSO??? EEk!!! I would never use Brasso on anything. Back in the bad old days on Feebay there was a guy who recommended Brasso for everything and I'm sure some of the people who used it ruined some fine antiques. No, no, no. Bone is made of a once-living creature. Imagine what it would do to your flesh and bone. You really don't want to use it on this fan. I'm sorry, Shangas, but I think this is wrong.

Thank-you AJ! That was the section that made me think bone, things I learn from this board do sink in:)
I won't be cleaning it Bev.

Phew! It's quite lovely. I have a few old fans, but none like this.

Well the Brasso wasn't my idea. It was suggested to me once by a guy in an antique shop when I was asking how to clean residue off of some ivory. I can assure you I didn't come up with the idea myself. I'm sorry if I offended anyone.

I did. And it worked great. Mind you I used a ridiculously small amount.

Isn't it amazing HOW MANY of us former eBay board members positively SHUDDER at the very mention of the word BRASSO?
