My Mom was told this was a Native American pipe. I have no other information on it. Wondering if any of the experts might be able to shed some more light. The pipe is a little over 3 1/2" long. Thanks in advance!

It appears to be antler, rather than bone.

Yes, antler rather than bone. Antler has that spongy interior, while a bone would be hollow. It might have been made by a Native American but I think it is not particularly old, and probably made for something other than tobacco.

Yes, antler is a specialized type of bone, but a skeletal bone of this size and shape would probably be a long bone of some animal, which would be hollow after the marrow was removed. Because antler grows so quickly, it is less dense than skeletal bone.

Some skeletal bones do have spongy interiors, called "cancellous" bone (not cancerous) - vertebra, scapulas, ribs, skull bones, and the ends of the long bones.

Antler is a type of bone material, so technically all antlers are bone, but not all bones are antlers.

Thus the distinction is made when identifying the material buttons, jewelry, tools, pipes, etc. are made from. When it comes to the properties of bone and antler, they are actually quite different.

And when it comes to antlers, that's why they're called "antlers," not "bones." You seldom hear anyone saying "That buck has a nice set of bones on his head!"

Wow, I never imaging getting such a response on this one. So some poor buck sacrificed his malehood for a pot pipe! Thanks to all for the comments
