Vintage Lyre Back Chair - ID?

Mallary Furniture, Forest Hills, NY. Chair from 1945 if 12-45 is the date code.

Chair is a Federal revival, Duncan Phyfe Classical style sabre leg chair.

 

One of a set for a dining room table. Very popular style in immediate post-War era.

The Met has a set of these chairs made by Phyfe and a drawing in his hand with the price, chair below was more expensive than the usual sabre legs because of the carving.
Phyfe, a notorious hard head about not signing his furniture, apparently had no problems with signing his drawings.



"This scroll-back chair and its mates were part of a set of 24 made by Duncan Phyfe for the family of William Livingston, governor of New Jersey (1776–1790). A sketch of about 1816 in Phyfe's hand shows this type of chair and gives its price. These chairs were somewhat higher in price than for other contemporary scroll-back chairs due to the extra cost charged to carve the front paw feet. (See 65.188.2–.14 for set.)"

We just call these chairs regency style

 

This one looks to be in good shape, but without a seat. That's an easy fix. These post-WWII chairs were dirt common and not the greatest construction generally. My grandparents' set was probably 1945 or 1946 and had the carved rose on the back instead of a lyre splat. Even now 75 years later there are a ton around, suitable for "upcycling".

 

Lots found with needlepoint seats.

I have 6 of the rose carved ones around my DR table. Purchased at an estate sale quite a few years ago.

Mine do not have real hand needlepoint seats, but machine made type of needlepoint.

I've never been sorry for my purchase.

I think I might have paid $50 for 6.

 

They're still better than anything generally available now. Grandma's had real seats; she did them herself. The center decoration is often factory done with the background work done by hand.

 

Good. respectable post-World War II middle class taste. A very popular style but still... No shame.

Looks more like birch with a mahogany stain. Minimal value for a single chair .... under $20.00 in my neck of the woods.
