I've never seen something like this and not sure how best to describe. The blonde canvas is a very fine mesh, slightly stiff.

The butterflies and florals are done in tiny embroidery or could this be a petit point?

Both the canvas and the embroidery have a shiny sheen.

This panel is a very fine mesh netting remnant measuring 15" x 17". One side is selvage and the others are raw.

    Thanks for any help...

    Hi,
It is petit point. I used to do a lot of it when flying. With my astigmatism I could not read when moving.

LOL... you can't read when flying... but can do petit point! That is awesome!

    Hi @acvintage
What a charming little piece! LOVE it! The motifs are particularly darling! Yes, confirming petit point. It seems to have an Asian flavor like your red embroidery. The fabric looks almost like a rayon type silky blend; by the photo - which yes, can be somewhat stiff. I don't think pure silk would be "stiff"; but a rayon blend could be and would still allow for that pretty creamy color and sheen. The petit point motifs could certainly be silk. How beautifully executed!
    Thanks for sharing!

    Hi Leslie,
There use to be a football player named Rosie Grier who had the same trouble that is were I learned to start doing
it. I was always flying somewhere and it was easier to pack a few pieces of cloth than several books. I learned to sew 12 to 15 stitches to the inch. I never tried making lace it looked too complicated for me.

Thank you. Ok! Petit point it is then, with Asian motif of butterflies and florals. Any guestimate as to age?

I don't know if you can tell but the ground is actually a very, very fine mesh net canvas rather than a fabric. Or can canvas also be a rayon silky blend?

I remember Rosie doing needlework! :) Treat then; treat now! Lacemaking is very "mechanical" in an abstract way!

I'm guessing - truly a guess - mid century... especially if it is a rayon silky blend!

Good morning and thank you to all.
I've posted an add'l closeup that shows the net with 2 different backgrounds. Hope this helps.

Hi - this is most definitely Chinese, probably late 19th/early 20th and likely made to be used in a woman's summer robe (usually around the cuffs)

    Hope that helps!
