Is There a Name for This Occupied Japan Dish?

I think of this little dish as a pedestal soap dish, but I'm wondering if there's another name for it? It's small: 4 7/8" x 4" (top), 2 1/2" tall.

Soon as I saw the shape, I thought Japanese. This is a traditional shape for a food tray on a pedestal. When I saw the size, I realised it was something more recent as the old ones were about 8 inches square. So, more like a trinket tray, maybe. Very nice.

I had an antique cloisonne one, which is enamel and wires fired on a metal base. I will try and find a picture of it and add it here for you to see, or another if that does not work.

 

Here is an example, no side view which would be more helpful to compare the shapes. This is from 1860 or so.



If you can imagine, during the 19th century, the Japanese ate at low tables, with cushions they could kneel on, or sit, I suppose. So, elevated foot containers worked well for them.

 

I would use it for sauces to dip spring rolls or sushi into!!

I found my "Occupied Japan" blue willow was made in later 40"s

 

Exactly what I was considering, for food, perfect for dipping sauce. I love these small porcelain pieces, I use a small divided one for my pills. Easier to grab them in the shallow cavity. Anyway, it's always good to see new stuff. Occupied Japan was at the end of WWII, 1945-1952.
