I have a vase that seems to be really old,it is hand painted and the signs of aging(crackling, rust spots) seem to be legit. The bottom is some reign marks all I can slightly make out is maybe great and ming. If anyone recognizes anything please inform me thank you.

If it's not too late (edit functions are time limited) if you would edit your thread title to include "Chinese? pottery" you will attract the attention of one of our Asian arts members (who can translate and interpret the marks as well as comment on the pottery and it's decoration.)

The title is still the same. Did you click on "Thread Tools" or the Edit button below your original post?

Apparently he edited the wrong thread. I just commented on the other not knowing this one was here. I was thoroughly confused as it was about a painting, but the title said Chinese vase.

My guess is your vase is Japanese and not Chinese.
I am guessing at the date
    Late 1800s to 1930 - again guessing

Thanks, Pat. I didn't see that.

This vase also looks very unprofessionally decorated. Sloppy paint job, entirely too many "pops" in the surface, and that glossy black at the top and on the handles is just very uncharacteristic.

Sorry guys about the title editing error. Well I'm glad you guys know something more than I do. I mean it is not the best paint job I've ever seen but I only paid a dollar for it at the local goodwill and I thought it may be something but you never know right. You guys and your extensive knowledge is very much appreciated

No problem, Bobby. That's what we're here for. And hey - for a buck, I've bought worse. ;)

It would still be interesting to see what the translators have to say.

That's why I think it is turn of the century Japanese.

The style of manufacture and decoration.
And the dress and hairstyles of the people, these walked off a Kurosawa movie set.;)

    toomanytocount Boredom is a sin.

Sorry, my impression is an attempt to decorate in a Japanese-Chinese style, but the end result is very odd. The garments could be Japanese, but not quite with those ballooning pants, the hair styles are also suspicious. The marks on the base seems to want to say 'Ming Dynasty', but again not quite right.
Conclusion, probably another Asian country's export item mid 20th, if that old.

I thought the same about the characters on bottom, it's almost like ming dynasty but not quite.

The hairstyle with the top knot is called chonmage, sometimes the hair is longer at the back, this is the short version. The chonmage is associated with the Edo period:

Japanese men's pants are always wide, workers pants are even ballooning:

The hakama (modern adaptation with pockets)

I have trouble seeing an almost likeness to Ming marks:

I think the characters on the Japanese vase are not trying to be anything but themselves.
