    20200918_195821.jpg 20200918_192747.jpg 20200918_192706.jpg Hi All,

I was wondering if you could point me in the direction of someone that can help with the identification of a Wedgwood planter that my mother has.

It has been in the family for around 130 years or so. My grandmother had it for many years and it was passed down to her by her Uncle who was called Herbert Poole.

He was the driver and could also have been the then so called 'Batman' (if in the Army together) of Josiah Clement Wedgwood. The pot was given to Herbet Poole as a gift from Josiah for the years of service to him.

The tray you see in the pic we know is not part of it, in fact I think thats a cheese dish.

Anyway, the difficult part I have had is identifying its age. From what I can tell, it does not have the 3 mark date on it that was introduced after 1860. It does however have Wedgwood stamped on it in what looks like printers moveable type and looks like each letter has been pressed seperately. I am however no expert.
What does confuse me is the 10 that seems to be marked on it opposite the Wedgwood stamp with a couple of small impressions that look like an H and then an R or an A maybe?

There are no other marks on it.

I have attached the picutres so could you help me identify the date of this peice please or put me in touch with someome that can? The history behind it is so fascinating and we would love to find out if this is a peice that has been handed down through the Wedgwood family maybe, until given to my great, great uncle.
Thank you for your time and I hope to hear from you soon

If you select 'full image', when you post, then we don't have to click on multiple thumbnail pics. You could try 'edit' but that feature is rather short lived, so it may be too late to change now.

Can we see the whole jardiniere when it's not sitting on the cheese plate? Want to see the foot. Some of them did come with an underplate, but in the same color as the pot. The decoration on yours appears to be some of the Muses. Can't tell you which ones without seeing them all. Need an unobstructed view to tell anymore.

I only called it that because James did. Depending on the size of the jardiniere, seems a bit large for the bottom part of a cheese bell.

What I want to know know is whether the pot sits on a pedestal type base or on 3 little feet. If it has feet, the shape is called Imperial. I would also like to see it straight on so I can confirm that it is drum shaped, with no angling, flaring or rounding of the sides.

'WEDGWOOD' with nothing else incised on the bottom puts it to pre-1891.

Josiah Wedgwood, 1st Baron Wedgwood - Wikipedia

Colonel Josiah Clement Wedgwood, 1st Baron Wedgwood, DSO, PC, DL (16 March 1872 – 26 July 1943), sometimes referred to as Josiah Wedgwood IV, was a British Liberal and Labour politician who served in government under Ramsay MacDonald. He was a prominent single-tax activist following the political-economic reformer Henry George. He was the great-great-grandson of the famous potter Josiah Wedgwood.

Wondering if the 10 refers to 1910.
I know it's supposed to say England after 1891. There are however exceptions to every rule.

Would Josiah Clement Wedgwood have given Mr. Poole a used or older gift for his years of service? I would hope that what he gave was a new item.
1910 would make Josiah Clement Wedgwood only 38 years old. He had already done well for himself.

    @James Few
Do you know what years Mr. Poole was a driver for Wedgwood?

James, yours may be the absolute NICEST Wedgewood piece I've ever seen! Thanks for showing it!

What part of what country did the Poole family come from?

I thought the same about the 10 but if it was 1910 it would have a 3 letter date mark and the wedgwood stamp would be more uniform and orobably england marked somewhere as well.

Also wirh my thinking that this is a VERY old peice its not out of the realms of possibility that Josiah gave him a peice that had been handed down as it was said that this came from a cabinet in which it had been say in for years.

I am not sure of the dates of when he drove for him and unfortunately my nan is no longer with us so we cant be sure. Its something i am going to look into though as i am very intreagued!

    Thanks

Thank you, thats very nice of you to say.

That side of my family are from Cheshire, Congleton to be exact. The family name went from Poole, to Dale and then to Moss.

We have never seen it say on anything and there are no feet. The shape ofnitnis straight down and then it slopes in a little at the bottom and then has a sort of lip on its foot.

Its never had 3 little feet or a pedastal as far as i am aware.

I will get more pics as soon as i can
