Another eBay buy that has not arrived yet. I bought it as it looked to be very high quality although neither I nor the seller knew when or where it was made. It's a large piece at over 31cm (1ft) across the widest part.

My feeling (from the photos) is that it is definitely continental and I am leaning towards Paris porcelain. I have found Potter Rue De Crussol pieces with very similar decoration including the distinctive pattern gilded line.

I found Herend and Naples pieces with similar decoration but those factories are almost always marked with a back stamp.

There is an incised letter or numeral M perhaps or W.

    Any views?

Maybe what you need is an entomologist to tell you where your Lepidoptera & Coleoptera are native. :)

Beautiful, I love bugs. I think the incised mark is a "W" and is the potters mark (as opposed to the decorator or factory..)

    I could be wrong.

The pedestal bowl has arrived. It is huge. It’s a fabulous piece and, although it looks like it was made yesterday I think it’s very old. The painting is very well done.

I found this piece in my book on French porcelains. It was decorated by Rue De Petite Carrousel. The butterfly has the small shadow underneath. This is the only other example I’ve found of butterfly painting with the shadow.

Another reason for feeling it is old is it seems to have sagged at one end in the kiln. There’s a 1cm difference in height on each side of the centre line. 0E220E32-2355-4A0C-ACBF-58C45D09BB83.jpeg

Here’s what a major auction house thinks

“Thank you very much for your email regarding your centrepiece.

This is a very difficult one to appraise. I suspect that you are correct and that it is a Paris example. However, there is a chance that it is English. If English, it will have a more modest value of in the region for £150-250, but if Paris it will be worth a little more at perhaps £300-500. I am afraid that it would not be something that xxxxxxx can handle for you on this occasion as its value in either case falls below our £500 minimum consignment threshold. However, if you do wish to sell it any good local or regional auction house should be able to help.

    I hope this helps.
