If you could provide the dimensions, that may help.

Thanks Judy. Any advice welcome, always a minefield using a new website/forum etc! People have suggested pool cues, newspapers in a hotel/ gentleman’s club (to be offered by an attendant by the handle on top) I’m in South Africa so it could be something a bit colonial. I don’t think it’s v old. I guess it’s been modified but it’s difficult to see where and why!

Golf club rack? Will a golf ball fit in the hole? Maybe the holes on the right would hold tees.

I agree with golf club rack. The clubs would rest horizontally in the notches on the side supports, the balls in the larger holes, and the tees in the little holes. But WDIK, I don't play golf, LOL!

As already suggested, measurements might be helpful...

Can't see it for golf clubs or a croquet set, why would clubs or mallets be horizontal instead of vertical, as usual. Why would it hold eight mallets and only five balls, and what about the wickets and stakes? Why put so many tees on something that is clearly not intended for use on the course?

Wouldn't be for newspapers or magazines, since the the bottom two rod-holders would appear to be too close to the floor, and what would be the purpose of all those holes (and why five of the larger, rather than an even number)?

Don't know a thing about fencing, but horizontal storage for foils seems unlikely to me.

And why are the sides hinged - do you swivel up that bottom support and fold it for some reason?

    Interesting item...
