    Hi,

I've never seen this hallmark before, its very work and very hard to make out but it looks like a tine Maltese cross above an asterisk, the other marks a far to worn to get an accurate description,

If anyone has any advice on what the item is or when it was made I would be very grateful

    Many Thanks

    Martin

Martin, first thought was that this might be a silver plate mark, but other people may know better.

Edit: Joseph Rodgers & Sons maker

Object looks like a salt with a blue glass liner

Eye cup was my first thought but I am.not sure it is. Plenty of blue glass eye cups, but onein a silver outer seems odd

They did make silver eye baths/cups maybe these are just two that have been married.

Hi, many thanks for everyone's response, I have to say I really hadn't thought of an eye bath but it seems the perfect size, it is 5cm x 3cm and 3.5cm tall which is pretty much the measurements of a modern eye cup/bath.

I've heard of eye-baths, but I've never seen one that was that shape before! It's very cute!

And yes, the hallmark is definitely Joseph Rodgers & Sons. I've got knives from that company the the same mark on them.

    Salt dip.

    Think about it.

Too bothersome to take the liner out of the silver holder to put stuff in prior to using it. If people are like me, they put the wash in then realize the liner is still sitting in the silver liner. How to get the blue liner, now full of wash out without spilling.
So (and I would be dumb enough to do this), you tip the liner,(in the silver holder) over your eye. Pulling it away the silver comes off leaving the liner on your eye with the wash now flowing down your face, the the liner then falling down your front and spilling the rest of the wash on you.
    Just not practical.

    A salt dip.
