Featured Do you know what kind of stone I could search for on this ring?

The ring itself says sterling.. however, I have been trying to look up other stones that might resemble.

 

Light purple amethyst
The mounting decor is unusual!

 

There is no way to be sure what the stone is other than to have it tested.

The lighting is a problem too. Is there any way to get it outside against a lighter background? If all else fails, stick it on your hand and stick the hand out of a window.

 

Good suggestion. Or photograph just on a piece of white paper. Near natural light, the best.

The ring looks gold colored in this photo. Is there gold colored metal on top of the sterling or is the light just making the silver color look gold?

If two-toned metal here, bets are good that the secondary metal is 14K or better. It is a very attractive ring.

Agreed. There are some true over-the top desirable $$ pieces in this lot. Your mom or grandmother had excellent taste. You should do full research on these pieces.

 

Have y'all heard of Dr. Lori?? The antique appraiser?? I saw she has an online appraisal. I think it's 299. for 14 days and you can have her appraisers many items as you want. I've watched a few YouTube videos on her.

 

Please do not use an online appraiser, you need someone who can hold the item, test the metal and test the stones. No one can tell what the metal is from a photo, yes, it can be marked - but marks can be faked and testing the metal is ultimate proof. Also, stones can not be definitively IDed from a photo. You need a hands on appraiser!!!!!!!!!!

Nice stone and nice ring. I have seen that style chunky ring with floral appliqués before. Can't think where, of course.
Laura, what does your diamond tester say? It tests different stones, right? Not just diamonds?

 

@Any Jewelry - the setting style is very like some between the wars costume stuff from Bohemia. Post WW2 it got copied in West Germany.

I see in last pic it is marked sterling, the flowers and leaves look like gold. Better quality than costume IMO

 

Oh, I know it's not costume, but the style is reminiscent of those I cited.

 

Dr Lori was an art history professor and was a museum director at some point. I also watch her videos. She's good with European and North American fine arts and furniture, and has expertise on Native American art and antiques as well. If you have those types of items, she can do an excellent job. Don't ask her about Asian art, her knowledge on Asian art extends only on export wares and she relies heavily on marks used to export these items to USA like Made in China, Made in Occupied Japan, Nippon, etc. With regard to jewelry, I should say an appraisal from an actual jeweler is a better option to check the type of stones etc. For jewelries of more "exotic" origins, I think the people here can help you a lot.
