I was recently doing some light excavation in my backyard and came across this buried in the ground. This was found basically in the woods near Stone Mountain Georgia. Any idea the maker or if its a butter churn or what it is? And is it a good find or pretty common piece ? Age would be cool to know. Thanks for any and all help.
It will only let me post a few. I have to resize a bunch of pics somehow and ill post more

It's a great find. Valuable? I have no idea, but you have to love what the years in the ground did to the salt glaze. A piece like that, with the story behind it, can do really well in a regional auction house.

All of about 3 days. That's good to hear. So is it best to put on eBay or send to a real auction house. I buy and sell antiques. Well more so to get through college but things I am not attached to I let go or I will be a hoarder in no time haha. I love STUFF. I just like to know the history or how to put age on something such as this. I've seen crocks go for $6 at auction in Pennsylvania then the next one for 3k and they both looked the same too me. Just not my forte.

Hi and WELCOME, Rick!! That crock looks SO interesting!!!! Looks like it's had a couple of coats of paint, to me anyway.....and looks like being buried in Mother Earth for some time has done her job on it!!!!! Do you see any chips, cracks or anything broken on it??? Oh if these things could only talk!!!! How old is the house on the property??

I know. I would love to hear the store. I'm tempted to do some digging around because I know people used to bury their money so may find a lid and possibly some coins. There is one small chunk missing so you can see the red clay and other than that nothing. May be 1 tiny hair line in base but not sure. Ill post pics in a sec

The top looks like it had a lid at one time. How tall is it? And diameter?

Here are some other images. No cracks but the chips. And it even has baby smooth edges and not very deep

The house is from the 60s but there was one here prior if not mistaken. I'm at the end of a road in a subdivision and right next to some really deep wood. We actually cleared off half an acre and it was in the middle under a mess. Pines trees here 80 ft tall. I've never see such tall pine trees so this area has been wooded for some time.

    Ha Ha , yourself !
You've got 15 years to fill up the house , before you turn around and say....Where did all that time go...& why can't I put my car in the garage anymore ??

I hate to say this, knowing your hoarder tendencies and all, but since you found this on your property I'd keep it. Maybe even pass it on to the next buyer.
That way the piece stays with the property and it gives you more time to find out about it. It wouldn't surprise me if its related to the previous house, so it would be interesting to find out when that place was built and who lived there.

Looks like an old canning jar. I would strip the paint off to get a good look at what you have. Doubt it is terribly valuable but need to see what you have first.

@verybrad, is paint stripper going to hurt the glaze?????
